Check your cupboards for Harvest Quinoa Granola Bars, which are being recalled by The Quaker Company due to a possible listeria monocytogenes contamination.

This recall is especially upsetting because these bars are presented as a 'healthy' snack option, which I bet means many parents have been tossing them in their kids' lunch boxes and feeling pretty good about it. It's important to note that there have been no reports of illness due to these products, but if you find them in your home you must not consume them! Toss them away or return them to point of purchase.

If you think you or a family member has become ill after eating these products, please see your doctor immediately. Symptom of listeria monocytogenes are a pretty nasty list including vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.

Two varieties of bars are affected by this recall:

Quaker Harvest - Quinoa Granola Bars – Chocolate Nut Medley; 175 g (5 bars); Best before: 16 OC 16

Quaker Harvest - Quinoa Granola Bars – Yogurt, Fruit & Nut; 175 g (5 bars; Best before: 16 OC 12

These products are being removed from all shelves across Ontario and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation. It's possible this may lead to the recall of other products, as we've seen recently with a variety of frozen food recalls.

If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings and we'll be sure to keep you informed here as well.

how the heck does listeria get into cereal bars?

Great question. Other recent recalls for listeria have been based on certain specific ingredients. Could be the same issue?
