RECALL - Starbucks Coffee Company Cold-to-Go Stainless Steel Straws, Product Safety Recall

Stainless Steel straws sold at Starbucks Canada have been recalled on Aug. 2, 2016 in a product safety recall due to the risk they may pose. This recall is aimed primarily at young children who may use these straws simultaneously while involved in activities such as running or jumping. In Canada there have been no injuries reported to Health Canada but Starbucks Coffee Canada, Inc. has received one report of injury to a child's mouth.

Do you use these straws? We have 3 of these straws in our home and I bet a lot of you and your friends have purchased these, too. Approximately 301,261 straws were sold in Starbucks locations across Canada, and they were sold from June 2012 to June 2016.

The straws included in this recall are:

Grande and Venti sized reusable stainless steel drinking straws. They have a ridge at the bottom that prevents the straw from being fully pulled through the hole in the cup's lid.

They were sold either in packages of three, or as part of Grande and Venti sized beverage cups with stainless steel straws, in 2 various sizes:

  • Grande: Approximately 24 centimetres (9.5 inches) in length and 0.76 centimetres (0.3 inches) in diameter for 473 millilitre (16 ounce) sized cups
  • Venti: Approximately 26.4 centimetres (10.4 inches) in length and 0.76 centimetres (0.3 inches) in diameter for 710 millilitre (24 ounce) sized cups

Instructions from the Healthy Canadians website states:

Consumers should immediately take the stainless steel straws away from children and not allow children to handle or use the product, or dispose of the product in regular household garbage.

So basically the same as any straw if you let your kid run with it in their mouth...

Next they're going to recall scissors, cause those could be harmful if you let your children play with them while running or jumping

Thank you Karen, but at 52 I don't think I'm a kid anymore! Lmao!

This is just dumb.  We have many stainless steel straws in our house as they're reusable and don't end up in landfills like the plastic ones.  I tell the kids not to walk or run around while drinking...like the same as forks for eating.  It's called judgement.  Is your kid old enough to understand what will happen if they trip? No? Then don't give them a stainless steel straw!

Great reply, Fenny! Thank you for being a responsible and thoughtful parent.
