I am a huge believer in the phrase "Reduce, Reuse & Recycle" for so many different reasons.  Not only is it great for the environment, it also saves you money.  I especially like to implement this phrase when it comes to the holidays and decorating.

Halloween is almost upon us, and nothing says Halloween like a fully decorated spooky house for trick or treaters to visit. I remember when I was a kid, my friends and I would be on the look out for the most decorated house because we wanted to make sure we went to those houses while out on Halloween night.

It can be quite expensive to decorate the outside of your house for the trick or treaters, but it doesn't have to be. Decorations can also take up a lot of storage space, which lets face it, most of us don't have. A great way to save on money and space is by making your own decorations that you can just throw out after Halloween.

There are so many different decorations that look really cool for outside that you can make as a family, and they are absolutely free.  Just use what you have at home.

Garbage Bag Ghosts

Grab all those plastic shopping bags that you normally recycle and stuff the ends with recycling material or more bags.  Draw faces on them and hang them in your trees, on the fence or from your house.

Mummy Mason Jars

Wrap some mason jars with toilet paper and draw eyes on them. You can also put a tea light candle or light in them to light them up on your front porch.

Tin Can Pumpkins

Paint any soup, sauce or bean cans orange to look like pumpkins.

All of these crafts are made from items around the house that you would be throwing out anyway.  Also, it is fun to make your own decorations with the kids.

If all else fails, you can always do the tried, tested and true scarecrow.  Grab some old clothes and stuff them with leaves, and sit or stand your scarecrow in your front yard.  Get creative though, don't just use a pumpkin for a head.  Make a paper-mache head, use a funny looking doll and stuff it in the clothes for a small head or make your own with a paper bag.

Happy Halloween!
