Like I mentioned above, this game is one of the top selling games ever on iOS. I read somewhere recently that it was the third highest grossing app ever. I can't find that article anymore, so I could be wrong, but I'm sure it has sold a ton. The premise is simple: Zombies are trying to invade your house via your yard and you have to plant various flowers, vegetables and mushrooms to kill the zombies. It's addictive, and the extra play modes will keep you busy for a long, long time.
The reason, likely, that you're getting this game for free is that Plants vs. Zombies 2 is about to be released in July. It's another one of those sales that is meant to get you excited for the sequel by giving you the original. It's a trend I've been seeing lately and it's awesome!
