The Super Race Set by Mega Bloks and Hot Wheels has enough pieces to build up to eight mini-cars. You can mix and match the pieces to create your own customized cars. there are endless possibilities for combining pieces to produce super speed racers. I was thinking of six or eight wheel units that might be a lot of fun.
I like how this toy merges playing cars with building toys to cover two types of play. First, build your speed racers by mixing and matching parts until you have the perfect combo. Next, race your cars against a friend or sibling to see who wins. Thirdly, repeat steps one and two as necessary.

I did find this same set on sale at Toys R Us but they are out of stock, so it doesn't really count. The MSRP directly from Mega Bloks is $21.99 Canadian, so the original price at Amazon is on par with that. I could not find this toy at Chapters, Walmart, or Sears. Given that most children I know like to build stuff and like to race stuff, I figured this set would make an excellent Christmas gift for some lucky boy or girl. I used to play with Hot Wheels when I was a kid, and I know of some people who even collect the cars. My favourite car was one that changed colour when you dipped it in cold or hot water.
