Fun & Inexpensive Family Day Ideas

A lot of the country will be celebrating Family Day today, which means attractions like City Zoos and Science Centres will be jammed packed with families looking for something to do.  For my family of four, taking the kids to places like this can be a very expensive day. I often look for alternatives to those expensive and over-crowded places to have fun with my family.

Here is a look at some fun Family Day activities to do with your family tomorrow that won't break the bank.

Snow Fun: Some parts of Canada have been getting a ton of snow. When we get snow, we get to do some fun activities in the snow.  Building a snowman, sledding, and building an igloo in the back yard are just a few of the fun things that I love to do with my family that cost absolutely no money at all.  It gets you out of the house and is great exercise for the whole family.

Movie Day: If the weather is not cooperating for some outdoor fun, a movie day is the perfect way to spend time as a family.  You can pick a family favourite or get a new movie and make some popcorn.  I love doing this wearing our jammies and cuddling on the couch.

Cook your Favourites: This is a great way to bond as a family.  Baking some family favorite cookie recipes, make your own pizza for dinner with fun toppings, or even make something new to try.  I think cooking with your kids is a great way to bond because they learn a skill, they learn what goes into food and they can learn what goes into a balanced meal.

Games Day: I love to play board games and card games with my family.  You can switch it up and take turns by letting the winner of a game choose the next game to play.  Not only it is fun, but you can teach your kids on being a good winner and loser.

Swimming: This is the only activity that actually costs something, but it is a really inexpensive way to have fun.  It is great exercise, it is a great skill to learn and costs just a few dollars per person.  Check your local pools for the Family Day schedules because this is a fun way to spend part of your day.

Arts and Crafts: I was a teacher at an elementary school, so I love arts and crafts.  My kids also love to do arts and crafts and it is a lot of fun to spend a day doing them.  Gather items such as crayons, paper, glue, tape, cardboard scrap cloth, basically anything you can find can turn into a craft.  There are loads of ideas on websites like Pinterest and most are very simple to do.  It is a great indoor activity to do with the family.

All of these activities are absolutely free or cost very little and can really be done any day of the week.  You don't need to spend a lot of money to have good quality time with your family and really, that is what this holiday is all about. If all else fails, take the dog for a family walk or head to the park.  It doesn't really matter what you do, as long as you spend the time together as a family.

We at Bargainmoose hope you all have a fun Family Day with your families today!
