Make Your Own Healthy Jello - Any Flavour!

Make Your Own Healthy Jello - Any Flavour!

We went to the Mandarin the other night, and my kiddo was obsessed with their Jello. I thought that it would be a good treat to have once in a while at home, but when I grabbed the box of Jello mix off the shelf, I was a little stunned by the ingredients. That is a lot of sugar. I set out to find a way to make healthy (or at least, healthier) Jello for the kids - and it actually works out better anyway. You can make your own Jello in absolutely any flavour. Plus, keep your eyes peeled because Bulk Barn often has a print coupon for $3 off $10 - so you can even get a discount on the ingredients.

Gelatin that is often found in the store bought Jello packs is made from conventional animals who were not fed a very good diet. You can get gelatin made from grass-fed animals and actually have a good protein source. This type of gelatin can improve your hair, skin and nails as well as your digestive system - so why not!? I was able to pick some up at Bulk Barn but you can also grab this Beef Gelatin Powder by NOWfrom If you can make this treat healthy - it can also be a good lunch snack for Back to School.

So let's get started! To start, you will need:

  • 1 1/2 cups of organic or freshly juiced fruit juice of your choice (grape, orange, or even a mixture)
  • 1/4 cup cool water
  • 1/4 cup hot (almost to the point of boiling) water
  • 1 tbsp Gelatin Powder (preferably pasture raised)
  • 1-2 cups of fresh fruit (optional) - I used strawberries

You can also double this recipe quite easily, if you want to end up with even more delicious, healthy Jello. Just follow these steps once you have your ingredients gathered:

1. Pour cool water into a large mixing cup or bowl and add the gelatin powder

2. Stir until it is all mixed in. You will notice your liquid has gotten thicker.

3. Add your hot water, and stir again. Your liquid should become a pinch thinner again.

4. Add your juice, and mix well.

5. Put your fruit into the container you are going to set your Jello in. I usually do several little bowls so that we can easily serve. So we put some strawberry chunks into the bottom of each bowl. Check out these Plastic Bowls - they should be perfect!

6. Pour your Jello mixture over the fruit into your container(s) and make sure that it has entirely coated the fruit too. You can give it a stir if you wish, but I didn't need to.

7. Put your Jello in the fridge and cover it. Let it sit for 2-3 hours or even overnight.

8. Serve!

A big thanks to Wellness Mamafor this recipe that was easy and worked out wonderfully.

This would go well with the Bella 5-Speed Digital Juicer advertised elsewhere on Bargain Moose as selling currently for just $19.99 at Giant Tiger. Thanks for the tip!
