I did a bit of looking around because I didn't really know the prices of UPS' nowadays. I haven't shopped for a UPS in years. Actually, the last UPS I priced was a UPS for an entire office building. It was a tiny bit more money than this. Anyway, the cheapest I found this UPS (other than the sale at Canada Computers) was for $170, but it was also on sale for $50 off. The starting price was $20 more. This one was originally $199.99. You save $50 so you only end up paying $149.99.
A lot of people don't have a UPS and I think, for a lot of them, it's because they don't know what it is. Basically, a UPS is a big battery that can run your equipment for a little while during a power outage. You keep your computer, monitor, TV, sound system, and whatever else you want plugged into it, and when the power goes out it kicks in to keep the item powered. This prevents your electronics from sustaining damage, prevents computers from data loss and gives you enough time to shut everything down. It also protects against power surges and conditions the power coming in.
Most good UPS', including this one, have a software package that will save open files and shut down your computer if the power goes out and you aren't around. This particular one has four battery and surge protected outlets, four surge protected only outlets and protection for network, serial and coaxial connections. It also has an LCD display to monitor the status of the unit.
Shipping is based on what you get and where you ship it. UPS' are pretty heavy, so shipping may seem expensive.
