Air Canada, WestJet Increasing Checked Luggage Fees

Air Canada, WestJet Increasing Checked Luggage Fees

It's official. Earlier this week, two major Canadian airlines announced that it will now cost you a little bit more to check a bag.

Both Air Canada and WestJet are raising their fees to $30 for the first checked bag (from $25) and $50 for a second bag (from $30).

The new rates are already in effect, and the increased fees apply to the lowest fare classes with both airlines.

Officially, the new fees apply as of Oct. 1 to domestic flights booked as early as last Friday and all US and international flights booked on or after this Tuesday. The new rates apply to all Air Canada flights departing on or after Oct. 5.

All Air Canada economy flex and economy comfort fares still receive a free first checked bag, as do elite members and anyone who books a flight as part of an Air Canada vacations package. Members of the military (with valid ID) qualify for up to three free checked bags.

For WestJet flights, these fees are waived for all WestJet Plus passengers, gold and silver rewards members or anyone who books using an RBC World Elite MasterCard.
