Pingo has two big draws besides it's low rates but before I get to those, I'll mention the rates. They have a great rate finder so I looked up a few.
- Calling the United States from Canada is 2 cents CAD a minute when you use their softphone and 5.4 cents CAD a minute when you use the toll free number
- Calling Vatican City from Canada is 30.3 cents CAD a minute when you use their softphone and 33.8 cents CAD a minute when you use the toll free number
- Calling the Kingdom of Lesotho from the Republic of Tonga is 409.556 IQD a minute when you use their softphone. You cannot call the Kingdom of Lesotho from the Republic of Tonga using their toll free number.
I mentioned the Softphone a couple of times up there so let me explain what it is. Softphone is a portmanteau of "software" and "phone" which means it's a phone that runs on your computer. This lets you call from any computer at a much lower rate. It's like using SkypeOut and SkypeIn, if you're familiar with that process.
The other big win here is that there is no calling card. It's all done on the phone with a pin and their toll free number. You don't have to worry about losing the card, breaking it, forgetting it, etc... Much more secure, too.
