I'm fat. Yep. I know, I don't write like a fatty, but it's true. I'm actually fat, and as a fat man, I've struggled with it. I've struggled to pull myself off the couch and grab that box of donuts I got at Costco. I struggle to step over my $2000 treadmill to get to the video games in that book shelf in the spare room. I struggle to get my pants on sometimes. All in all, though, I choose to be fat. Especially as of late, since I've had a kid, I've wanted less to be fat. The first time (at least since I've had a kid) that I seriously decided that I don't want to be fat was when I went on a low carb diet. I lost like 60 pounds. It was great. Then, I fell off the wagon. Again, my fault, but the diet worked and it was super easy. As of a couple of days ago, I'm back on the diet, and this time I'm trying the Paleo diet. It's basically low carb, but with a different name. Doesn't matter; I call it a diet, but for me it's more of a lifestyle change. It's like being vegetarian or joining a LARP group.

Now, I'm about as far away from digging all that tree-hugging hippy crap as is possible. I'm talking about the rah-rah-sis-boom-bah, you're number one, love yourself, think positive, blah, blah, blah. If that works for you, awesome. If you're like me, the fine proprietor of NerdFitness.com, Steve Kamb, might be able to help you out. He wrote two eBooks entitled The 15 Mistakes that Newbies Make (when trying to get healthy) and The Beginners Guide to the Paleo Diet that might help you out with losing some weight or putting on muscle.

I need to lose weight, so right now I'm not as concerned about building muscle, but the whole NerdFitness thing is geared towards both losing weight and putting on muscle. So, whichever one you need, you can find help with at NerdFitness. They even have a pretty good forum called NerdFitnessRebellion if you need help from the community. I've read the Paleo book and, while it wasn't anything I hadn't learned from the low carb diet a while ago, it was a good refresher and is a really simple breakdown of how and why it works. If you're new to low carb/paleo, it's a fantastic read. I've only read part of the other book, but it looks pretty awesome too, so make sure you check it out.
