DIY: 4 Ingredient Cheap Cleaning Slime

Have you ever seen that cleaning slime that they sell in electronic stores for upwards of $20? When I was in college I bought some and it worked great, especially for cleaning crumbs out of my keyboard. Now that I am a mom, I have a hard time spending $20 on that cleaning slime. So I took to the internet to find a recipe to make it myself, since it worked so well. So keep reading if you have some hard to reach areas that need cleaning like keyboards, car vents, and more. Keep in mind that you have to be okay with handling goo to get the job done. This recipe takes 4 simple ingredients, so get started.

Here's what you're going to need to make your very own Cleaning Slime:

Mixture 1:

  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 4 tablespoons Borax

Mixture 2:

  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons white school glue

These ingredients can be found at your local grocery store. Borax is a laundry booster which can be found in the aisle with the rest of the laundry detergents and such. For the white school glue I would suggest Elmers. So follow these steps to get that dirt and grime out of the nastiest little places:

Step 1: Take a small dish and mix the 2 tablespoons of school glue with 1 tablespoon of water. Be sure to mix it really well. Essentially you want it to be a consistent looking mixture. Don't wait too long between steps because the glue will dry unfortunately.

Step 2: Grab another small bowl and mix the 4 tablespoons of Borax with 4 tablespoons of water. Please make sure you mix this well enough that all of the borax dissolves. This is very important.

Step 3: Now you can mix both mixtures together. Make sure you immediately stir it, which will create  your amazing cleaning slime. Then you can use your hands to knead and play with the slime until it no longer feels too wet. You want it to feel slightly damp though, so it can pickup crumbs and such. The kids will love this step, just make sure their hands are clean and dry.

Getting Creative: If you want to get a little creative with this recipe, then feel free to add a few drops of food colouring or even glitter. Though the glitter may make it less effective at cleaning those hard to reach places.

So, within a matter of minutes you will have yourself some awesome cleaning slime without spending a fortune! I just love when great things can be frugal things as well, don't you? To use this 4 Ingredient Cleaning Slime, just squish it onto your keyboard or vents and make sure it seeps into all the hard to reach places. Then you can gently pull it away to reveal all of those nasty chip crumbs you left in your keyboard while watching your favourite TV series online. Yuck!

Now, some of you are probably asking about storing this fantastic cleaning slime. Yes, this slime will dry out fast because it has white school glue as an ingredient. You should never have it out longer than the time it takes to clean something. For storing it I would suggest a small container with a lid. Make sure it is air tight. At least this mix is easy enough to make, so if it does happen to dry out you can always use the ingredients to make more. I am sure you can make lots of batches of this stuff with the ingredients you purchased.

In fact, you could even get fancy and make some pretty containers and give this stuff away as gifts. Be sure to include the recipe and instructions in case they want to make more as well. After all, this stuff doesn't last forever even in an air-tight container. Some craft paint and a mason jar with some ribbon can really pretty this stuff up. Be sure to show us your results!
