Zipcar: $10 Off Account For College Students

Zipcar: $10 Off Account For College Students

Zipcar is offering $10 off new accounts for college students. Just enter in your school name and see if your university is a member of Zipcar.

I tried a few universities around Canada, and the only one I could get this working for was University of Toronto. I kept getting an error every time I tried UBC in Vancouver. I did not try all the universities (that would be a lot), so you may wish to check if yours is on there. I know that Zipcar’s presence in Canadian cities is limited to Vancouver and Toronto right now. However, they may be present at large universities where they do not have a presence otherwise.

When I went through the University of Toronto link it said that students could sign up to Zipcar for just $20 (save $5), and the $30 application fee was being waived. This seems like a different promotion: though in many ways better as you save $35. However, some websites just add things up oddly.

Zipcar is a pretty awesome system, and for a university student it is like borrowing a ticket to freedom. Zipcar is simple. You just need to:

  • Sign-up if you are 18 years or older.
  • Reserve from any device that has an internet connection. Take a car out for hours or days.
  • Save as gas and insurance are always free.
  • Drive away: take your car and then return it to the same spot by the end of your rental time.

While this program is only available at a few universities across Canada, I still think it is a worthwhile deal. In addition, for Canadians that are going to be schooling across the border, you can also save $10 on your Zipcar membership at USA universities. Zipcar is more common in the USA than Canada right now. I do hope that changes. I would love to see Zipcar spread across Canada because car sharing would save an average Canadian household thousands of dollars a year. If we had access to a car-sharing program, my husband would sell his car in a heartbeat.

For more details on this offer, check the website.

Just a little note, while writing this post I had many problems with their website. I am not sure if it is just my internet hating me again, but the website was slow and sometimes it would not load. You might need a little patience with this one.

Zipcar Canada: No Annual Fee + $15 Free Credit

Zipcar Canada: No Annual Fee + $15 Free Credit

This is a post aimed at those Moosers living in the metropolitan areas of Toronto and Vancouver, so it won’t be relevant to all of you. Zipcar is the world’s largest car sharing service and they are offering a new plan where you can use a car Monday – Friday with no annual fee. New Zipcar sign-ups will receive free $15 credit!

It is called the “access plan” and you can drive most zipcars and zipvans Monday – Friday with no annual fee. This is great because the other two plans either required you to pay a $65 a year annual fee or spend at least $50 a month. This plan doesn’t require a monthly or yearly commitment – awesome!

This is an amazing alternative to owning a car – imagine the money you will save not having to spend on car insurance, maintenance, and other unforeseen expenses! This is fabulous if your car needs are minimal – trips to the doctors office, grocery store, and other small excursions.

This company is only in Toronto and Vancouver right now. I really hope they expand across the country because it is a fantastic idea. You can get a car when you need it for either hours or days. Need a car for the grocery store? No problem!

Rates? I looked at the rates for Vancouver and here is a quick rundown. You have a $65 annual membership fee. The rates per hour are only around $8 – $9 depending on the day. This is for the occasional driving plan. There are tons of different plans and Zipcar is certainly cheaper than trying to keep your own car as an occasional driver.

Zipcar Canada Coupon Code: $25 Free Credit

This is a post aimed at those Moosers living in the metropolitan areas of Toronto and Vancouver, so it won’t be relevant to all of you. Zipcar is the world’s largest car sharing service, and they’ve released a new coupon code for their Canadian site, offering new customers a free $25 driving credit.

How does it work, I hear you ask. You apply online, and when approved you receive a Zipcard. You can then reserve a car, by the hour or by the day and prices include gas and insurance. You go to the location, put the Zipcard to the windshield and it unlocks the car, and you use it for the course of your reservation, replacing it at the end. Sounds pretty simple!

Here’s a bit about the costs. Firstly, there’s a one-time application fee of $30. Once you are approved as a member, hourly rates start at $9, and daily rates from $78, for weekdays (weekends are more expensive). There is an annual fee of $65 for use of the service, which seems pretty reasonable to tell the truth. Plus, you’d be getting the free $25 driving credit from the above coupon code.

Now, I will admit that I have never used Zipcar myself, so I am only writing this post based on the information on their site, and a bit of googling. Upon looking for Zipcar reviews, I found a few comments:

Zipcar is really good. No, really good – seriously! (Yelp.ca)

Zipcar is outstanding. My wife gave it four stars but I’ll give it 5.

Terrible customer service.

Overall, Zipcar has got the right idea with its affordable prices, convenient locations and easy accessibility. (Ubc)

Reviews seem overwhelmingly positive, with a few negatives thrown in there, but I think you can expect that from any such service. And if you’re planning on signing up to Zipcar, make sure and check out our Zipcar coupon codes pages.
