CRA Extends Tax Filing Deadline to May 5th

CRA Extends Tax Filing Deadline to May 5th

The CRA has extended the 2014 income tax and benefit returns deadline from April 30th to May 5th. Therefore, taxes filed by midnight on May 5, 2015, will not incur interest or penalties. This also means you have until May 5 to pay any taxes you owe for last year without incurring penalty or interest.

Your first question may be “why?”. Well, the CRA accidentally sent out a communication back on April 24 with the incorrect filing deadline – May 5th instead of April 30th. Instead of retracting this statement, they decided to stand by their word (email) and extend the deadline. I think this is really awesome of the CRA and I give major kudos to them for taking responsibility for their own error. I know they could have simply said, “whoops, ignore the date in the email” but they decided to honour their word – pretty cool. I wish more companies would do this!

This is not the first time we have seen the CRA extend the tax deadline in recent history. Last year the tax deadline was extended due to the Heartbleed bug. That extension was also by five days.

Now, this means you all have an extra five days to finish your taxes and pay the government what you owe (if you owe anything) without penalty. There are still some good tax software deals around, so I have done a little roundup of them for you.

We have an exclusive deal with Turbo Tax for Moosers! Receive 17% off your tax software when you click through this link. Originally $17.99, the tax software starts at just $14.39 after discount.

Students file for free using coupon code FAY1493 at Dr Tax. Now that finals are over, get your taxes done before the deadline!

Receive 20% off your tax software when you click through our exclusive link here. Tax packages start at $49.99.

There are also a few freebie tax websites for simple tax returns. Try out H&R Block or Studio Tax. For an easy to comprehend tax filing software, the new pay what you want Simple Tax looks gorgeous. These are some of the deals you can still find on tax software. Check out our coupon forum for all the current tax software deals.

Studio Tax: Free Downloadable Tax Software for Personal or Professional Use

Posted by on February 21, 2015 at 3:00 PM

Studio Tax: Free Downloadable Tax Software for Personal or Professional Use

StudioTax has free tax software that is NETFILE certified. This tax software will download to your computer and is certified for both Mac and PC computers. Pay absolutely nothing for StudioTax and file up to 2o returns. There are two different software packages depending on your needs: one is for personal use and the other is for professional tax preparers.

While the domains are different (one is .com and one is .ca), both of these tax software packages are for filing your Canadian taxes. Make sure you download the right software, as StudioTax Enterprise cannot be used for individual tax returns. To use StudioTax Enterprise you must be a CRA registeres tax preparer. If you are not, then be sure to choose StudioTax 2014.

This software does not run off a browser. Instead, you download the software to your computer. Unlike most paid tax software packages, you can file up to 20 returns. Most paid software allows up to eight returns. The StudioTax Enterprise software allows up to 20 returns and gives the option of purchasing a license for unlimited returns – should you need it.

StudioTax 2014 is CRA and Revenue Quebec certified for Netfile and printed returns. The Mac version is CRA certified for Netfile and print returns, but not for Quebec returns.

Now, if you have used StudioTax before, then importing your previous returns is simple. However, StudioTax does not support importing previous returns from other programs you might have used.

Studio Tax is easy to install as no name, phone number, address, email, or credit card number is required. There is also no registration, no license key, and no software activation required. You simply download and go. In addition, they will not harass you to upgrade or to pay for the software (or upgrades) at any time. If you do love the software and want to donate, they have a button for that.

I have not tried this yet, but I did read a couple reviews on other websites. Apparently, if your taxes are straight forward, than this software works well. However, if you have complicated tax returns then you may be better off with a software package that gives you access to an accountant as well.

Hey Moosers, have you tried out StudioTax before? If so, let us know what you think!

File Your Taxes Completely Free Online With H&R Block

File Your Taxes Completely Free Online With H&R Block

Mooser Greg emailed us to say he’s been reading our blog and sees that we are blogging quite a few free tax services. He didn’t want us to miss out on one more (because it is great to have choices!) so he let me know that H&R’s online tax software is absolutely free.

When I was a teen/young adult, I always took my taxes to H&R Block so I could get that instant refund. Little did I know I could have done them on my own and not sacrificed that percentage of the very little money I was returned. It actually was not as easy as it is these days since there really was no such thing as the internet. Now that I’ve aged myself, I’ll say the internet was probably around, it just was not mainstream yet. Like, when I was in college for journalism, there wasn’t even an option of the career path of blogger or website manager. Funny how technology changes!

Anyway, I’m sure we are super glad to have tax filing software at our fingertips and we are even more glad to have it completely free. I was skeptical for a second, wondering how such a large company like H&R Block would have free tax filing software, but like their site says – free to start, free to file, free for everyone. Works for me!

Even cooler, you don’t have to sit on your computer in the evenings figuring out all your deductions, you can do it right from your phone or tablet. If you have a public transit commute, you can actually sit there and do your taxes on your way to work. That’s what I call working the system!

They also say they are 100% accurate and if you incur a penalty or interest because of a calculation error, they’ll reimburse you that money. They also have what they call a refund-o-meter, which gives you real-time accurate calculations, so you can get super excited as you enter in your info (or cry into your tea, whatever).

SimpleTax: Pay What You Want for Tax Software

Posted by on February 19, 2015 at 3:00 PM

SimpleTax: Pay What You Want for Tax Software

You may not be able to control how much you pay in taxes, but you can control how much you pay for your tax software. SimpleTax Canada is a pay what you want tax filing service that is NETFILE certified. Use their software to file your taxes this year and pay what you want for the software, even if that is $0.

The website is slick and the software, from what I have heard, is very easy to use. SimpleTax has many winning features. The simple layout is easy on the eyes and easy to select the options you need  (via an amazing search engine) while inputting data. The entire return is on one page and your refund is continuously recalculated as you progress through the form.

SimpleTax will also help your find the right combination for the highest discount. Are you filing with a spouse? SimpleTax well tell you how to split things like donations, political contributions, public transit amounts, medical expenses, pensions, and more so you get the highest refund possible.

SimpleTax also offers several guarantees. They guarantee the highest refund possible. If someone else finds a higher amount, then they will reimburse you the amount you paid for the software. They also guarantee that their calculations are accurate. Finally yet importantly, the power is really in your hands. If you do not like their software then you do not need to pay a cent – and you can still file your return with them.

Now, there are a few other free tax software packages out there – but most of them you have to download and not all of them are NETFILE certified. SimpleTax Canada works in your browser so there is no need to download any software. It is also PC, Mac, Linux, and iPad friendly.

People may look at SimpleTax and think it is a free tax software. In many ways it is, but companies like this need funds to continue offering such a stellar product for such a low cost. I think of this model as a ‘give what is within your means’ to the developers. If you cannot afford anything, then you can use SimplyTax for free. If you can afford a few dollars then I recommend paying them that so this time next year you can find the same offer.

UFile Canada: Free Tax Return for Students

Posted by on February 19, 2015 at 2:18 PM

UFile Canada: Free Tax Return for Students

If you are a student and paid tuition in the last fiscal year, you can file your taxes with Dr Tax UFile for free.

Click here to see this student promotion @ now

  • Special offer code: FAY1493
  • Discount: free student tax filing
  • Expiry: Unknown

There is a long list of rules so I will try to summarize them for you. This offer is open to Canadian residents who have attended school for a minimum of one month during the tax year. You also need to be designated as the ‘family head’ for the purposes of filing your taxes.

Filing your taxes is as simple as tax filing can be. Login or create an UFile account for the current tax year. Then enter your tuition fees and months at school. After that, find the “Special offer” form via UFile’s QuikClik Navigator – you may need to scroll down for the offer. In the special offer box, enter the code listed above and then click next.

UFile Canada: Free Tax Return for Students

You have hit all the important steps – all that is left to do is actually enter your information for tax purposes. You have the option of printing out the taxes and mailing them in or NETFILE your return. I think submitting online is simplest and the entire process should not take you too long.

This offer is valid regardless of your personal income as a student. I know as a student that it is difficult to make ends meet. You need to pay tuition, pay for books, pay for transportation, and then there are housing and food costs. As a student, I was rather grateful for any student freebies or even price reductions. It is hard enough to budget without taxes to think about.

I also know how inconvenient it is to do taxes. Right now, you are probably in between classes and wondering how you will ever get your taxes done in between classes, studying, assignments, and life. I find filing online the easiest way to take care of your taxes and, for the average student; it should take less than an hour.

I assume this promotion expires the night before all your tax returns have to be filed with the government, but the promotion does not say.

Check out this and any future Dr Tax Ufile coupon codes on the forum.

Ethical Deal: Up to 64% off Accubusiness Tax Return – Starting @ $25

Posted by on January 28, 2015 at 1:30 PM

Ethical Deal: Up to 64% off Accubusiness Tax Return Starting @ $25

Tax season is quickly upon us my dear Moosers! Ethical Deal has an offer for Canadians across the country. Save up to 64% on personal, business, or corporate tax returns (up to $300 value) at Accubusiness with the following Ethical Deal voucher.

The voucher structure is as follows:

  • $25 for a personal tax return from Accubusiness ($70 value)
  • $75 for a business tax return from Accubusiness ($150 value)
  • $150 for a corporate tax return from Accubusiness ($300 value)

The personal tax return is 64% off, while the business and corporate tax returns are only 50% off. Either way, you save money on doing your taxes with the assistance of an accountant.

In-person filing is available in Vancouver if you live there. You will need to phone-in to make an appointment. The vouchers are valid as of February 15th, 2015. When you call in, be sure to quote your voucher number.

All other vouchers can be redeemed online and thus your taxes will be filed online via their online service. However, during the process you will get to work with a knowledgeable accountant who can answer any questions you might have and guide you through any tricky parts. They have an email address where you can contact the accountants for assistance.

The best part of this deal is getting access to an accountant while filing your taxes. There has been so many times I have been curious what I should file something under, or what the form meant when it asked for particular information. When you do your own taxes, there is just no one to ask. As a student, I paid H&R Block $25 to do my personal tax return, which made the entire process so much simpler. It also seemed that the years I used H&R Block I was not audited whereas the years I tried to do it myself, I always got something wrong and was audited. The $25 H&R Block deal was just for students, but I am no longer a student. I am happy to see this deal from Accubusiness as it is a great price for help filing your taxes from certified accountants.

You may purchase multiple vouchers and give them as gifts. The vouchers themselves do not expire for one year once they become valid at the middle of February.

Get Ready For Tax Season With 15% Off @ TurboTax Canada

Get Ready For Tax Season With 15% Off @ TurboTax Canada

I hate to say it but tax season is coming up and if you’re not ready yet, then here’s a great opportunity to save some money on tax software. To help you do just that, we have secured a 15% discount for you to save on online editions of TurboTax by Intuit.

Every year, I tell myself that this year will be the year that I do my own taxes and every year, I end up waiting until the last second, thus falling into panic mode and then submitting all of my tax papers to an accountant.

This year, however, I really am considering cracking down on learning how to do it, especially since I have heard extremely positive feedback about TurboTax’s software. Heck, just the fact that their personal tax software over 17,000 reviews with a general consensus of 4.5/5 stars is reassuring enough. Here’s what one reviewer had to say about Turbo Tax:

This is the first time I have filed online and I found Turbo Tax easy to use. I did returns for me, my wife and three students in an afternoon.

It’s accurate and up to date with the most recent law changes but the biggest reason as to why I’m thinking of filing them myself this year is because of the new Family Tax Cut.

Back at the end of October 2014, Stephen Harper announced a “family tax cut” as he labelled it, which is essentially a non-refundable tax cut that allows one spouse to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to a spouse within a lower tax bracket for a tax credit of up to $2,000. With it, also come the following changes:

  • Child care deduction limit under age of 7: from $7,000 to $8,000
  • Child care deduction limit from 7-16 year old: from $4,000 to $5,000
  • Disability tax credit for eligible children: from $10,000 to $11,000
  • Universal Child Care benefit for a child under 6: from $100 to $160 per month
  • Universal Child Care Benefit for a child between 6-17 years old: from $0 to $60

Of course, the family tax cut doesn’t apply to all Canadian families but it’s still a nice relief for those who do qualify. For more information, check out Simple Tax’s article “Making sense of the family cut“, which lists a couple of scenarios and the kind of tax credit parents could expect to receive.

With this in mind, it’s definitely reassuring that TurboTax is up-to-date with regards to the new Family Tax Cut. Not only that, but it is also designed to optimize RRSP contributions and reduce tax owed by splitting the pension income with a partner.

With regards to TurboTax’s personal tax software, here is a breakdown of the prices that you can expect to see with the 15% discount:

  • Standard: reg. $17.99/ now $15.29
  • Premier with guidance: reg. $34.99/ now $29.74
  • Home & business: reg. $49.99/ now $42.49

TurboTax software is also available for businesses, family (with 20 returns) or CRA Audit Defence.

H&R Block Canada Promo Code: Exclusive $1.50 Off Online Tax Filing

Posted by on April 28, 2014 at 6:00 PM

H&R Block Canada Promo Code: Exclusive $1.50 Off Online Tax Filing

At first I looked at the $1.50 discount and wondered if it was any good. Then I found out that you can file your taxes online from H&R Block from only $9.95, so $1.50 off means it would only cost $8.45 to file my taxes. This rate definitely beats out online tax filing programs like TurboTax who charge a minimum of $17.99 to file.

Click here to file your taxes @ now

  • Coupon Code: MOOSE15
  • Discount: $1.50 off
  • Expiry: 5th May 2014

If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, what are you waiting for? I always file very early in the year as I love spending my tax refund! Technically, you should save your tax refund or better yet, put it into an RRSP to get even more tax savings next year. However, I usually need it for something, like a trip (need is still the right word here), brakes for my van or something the house needs, etc.

If you are afraid of filing taxes online, you should not be. It has never been simpler and you really don’t need to pay someone a large portion of your return to do it for you, especially if you have a fairly easy income and deduction plan. I used to spend a big enough portion of my return getting H&R Block to do my taxes for me, meanwhile I only had a part-time job with very limited deductions, which would have been so simple to do myself. I own a small business now and those types of taxes can get confusing, but I still refuse to pay anyone to do them for me. Even H&R Block charges at least $60 to do taxes in their store, so why not let their software help you through it while you do it online?

If you are a student, the deal even gets better, because you can file online for free if you had less than $20,000 in income! They also have an online support team that can help you with any questions, and you can always call the CRA with tax questions.

Check for more H&R Block coupon codes in our coupon forum.

Best Buy Canada Promotional Code: 20% Off TurboTax Premier

Best Buy Canada Promotional Code: 20% Off TurboTax Premier

I believe that today is actually the day that pigs have begun flying because Best Buy has released a promotional code! It’s so incredibly rare that they release any codes at all that I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it, especially since it’s right on point with tax season! For  a limited time, you can either use the code or the printable coupon below to save 20% on a physical copy of TurboTax Premier.

Click here to print your Best Buy coupon now

Click here to order the TurboTax Premier @ now

  • Coupon Code: 20intuit
  • Discount: 20% off TurboTax Premier
  • Expiry: 3rd April 2014

Keep in mind that the Best Buy promotional code is case sensitive and must be entered in the exact same way as above for it to work (i.e., no caps). Although originally priced at $69.99, with the discount, TurboTax Premier drops down to just $55.99, which is cheaper than everyone else. Amazon and Staples, for instance, both have it for close to $69.99.

Although the premier one is for up 12 returns, if you don’t need that many, then you can get the TurboTax Standard instead as it’s currently on sale for just $28.99 (reg. $39.99) at Best Buy.

I know that filing your own taxes may seem daunting at first (heck, it has been for me for years) but the thing is that though you might spend a little longer this year figuring everything out, come next year, you will be all set and will simply breeze through it. Plus, on top of avoiding those outrageous fees that accountants charge, you will also have peace of mind in knowing that everything was filed correctly because oftentimes than not, even accountants make mistakes.

The biggest thing to remember though is that filing taxes in today’s day and age simply isn’t the same as to how it was decades ago. Whereas before, everything was filed with a pen and numerous confusing papers, now, softwares like TurboTax do all the work for you. All you need to do is enter your numbers, exactly as you see them. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Even better is that Best Buy automatically offers free shipping to all orders over $20.

Alternatively, if you prefer downloading an online version of TurboTax premier, then you can also use our BargainMoose exclusive TurboTax discount link to save 12% off its purchase instead.

TurboTax: 15% Off Desktop and Online Tax Software

Posted by on March 5, 2014 at 11:30 PM

TurboTax: 15% Off Desktop and Online Tax Software

Tax season is coming *doom doom doom* and you need to be prepared. The alternative is to run around in circles freaking out: either option has worked for me in the past. However, currently Intuit TurboTax is offering 15% off desktop and online tax software so you can file your taxes on time this year.

Are you a single person hold up in your house with a stack of papers that have ‘T’s and numbers following those letters? You should be good with the Standard Online version which will set you back only $15.29, originally $17.99.

If you have the same basic needs but you have a family: say a husband/wife and a few teenagers running around, then you will need to pick up the Basic CD/Download that was $19.99 and is now $16.99. It allows you do file up to eight returns and is perfect for families with more than one income.

However, if you own your own business or play with the stock market there are different tax software kits for those. Choose the one that best suits your needs by reading the product descriptions. I am totally not looking forward to tax season this year. All my forms from the bank have not even come in yet. I hate that I always have to do taxes right before finals: students shouldn’t have to do their taxes till the summer!

All products that download do not require shipping (of course). If you do choose to get the software shipped to you, shipping starts at $4.

H&R Block Tax Software: 1st Return Free & $5 off 10 or More Returns

Posted by on January 27, 2014 at 7:30 PM

H&R Block Tax Software: 1st Return Free & $5 off 10 or More Returns

You see that smiling face up there? That’s Todd McCallum, the VP of H&R Block Canada, and he wants you, yes you, to do your taxes for less!

We can’t link directly to the deal so to get to it click on Download Software then Product Comparison and Download Yours Now. That should get you to the download page.

Actually he probably wants you to pay as much as possible for doing your taxes because then the company makes more money but regardless of what he wants, we’re going to help you do your taxes for less. Right now you are saving $5 regardless of which licence quantity you choose but let’s mention a couple other ways to save some money. First off, the first return is free. If it’s just you doing your own taxes, it wont cost you anything. Additionally, if you make less than $20,000/year, your tax return is free.

If there is more than one of you and you make over $20,000 you’ll need to buy more licences. You can get 10 licences for $9.95 or 20 licences for $14.95. That’s a pretty sweet deal considering how much some other programs cost. However, you need to keep in mind that these programs, as helpful as they are, don’t do your taxes for you, you need to know a little bit about what you’re doing.

If you really know what you’re doing, you can use the extra licences to help out your friends and family. I always buy 10 licences and I use them for me, my wife, my wife’s parents, her sister and her sister’s husband. If you’re going to have extra licenses you might as well let someone else use them instead of letting them go to waste. Of course at $1 or $1.50/license, letting them go to waste isn’t the worst thing in the world!

Costco Canada: TurboTax Only $29 & Free Shipping

Costco Canada: TurboTax Only $29 & Free Shipping

TurboTax Standard for 2013 is on sale, the cheapest I could find it, at Costco for only $28.99, was $38.99. It will also ship to you free and the best part is that you don’t have to be a Costco member to get this item!

Don’t give your heard-earned tax refund to H&R Block or an accountant. If you have simple taxes, do them yourself! Even if they aren’t that simple, TurboTax software walks you through it. Trust me, I am not great with numbers, which is why I got into writing – no numbers involved – and I do my own taxes. I even have my own home-based business and my husband has complicated business expenses to figure out, but I find it easy with this software and if I can’t figure something out I can call their help desk via phone or live chat or the CRA. They even have a 100% accurate calculation and maximum refund guarantee, which means that if you figure out a higher tax refund elsewhere, they will give you back the cost of the software.

The standard edition is best for individuals, couples or families claiming standard deductions. This format is the CD format and it must be activated before use. If you were looking for a downloadable version, we do have an exclusive coupon code for 12% off, but that price will be higher than the one you see here.

Tax time is pretty much over for most of us and I’m sure some of us had a horrible time with it. Why not keep organized for next year with the ever-handy Quickbooks software?

The reviews are good on both of these 2013 versions. Fast and easy, which is the best way to do the books, QuickBooks will help you save time, money and keep you organized. Could QuickBooks come over and do my filing please?

The Pro version has over 100 reports built right in to the software, such as profit and loss, balance sheet and tax. You can easily see what you’ve ordered, what is in or out and track your orders. This is a great tool for small business accounting.

The Easy start version is easy to use, lets you see the money going in and out and maps all of your expenses right onto your tax return. You can produce professional invoices and even send them out using the software. With 20 built-in reports, your taxes will be effortless next year.

Shipping is free on both products.
