Google Play Album of the Week: Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters – 99¢

Posted by on July 12, 2015 at 3:30 PM

Google Play Album of the Week: Sonic Highways by Foo Fighters 99¢

Google Play has a new album of the week steeply discounted! This week, you can purchase Sonic Highways by the Foo Fighters for just 99¢.

I am completely unfamiliar with this album. Although I know of the band (hasn’t everyone heard of them) I have never really listened to their music. The album has 8 songs on it. Your purchase price works out to just over 12¢ per song! Songs on Goggle Play Store retail for $1.29 each as you can see. If you were to buy these songs separately, then you would pay more for one song than you would for the entire album.

I price compared this album with both other digital and physical copies. iTunes Canada sells the same album for $6.99 and a physical copy at Amazon Canada would cost you $10. Even compared to the digital copy, Google Play’s price is far superior.

Your new album features the following eight songs:

  1. Something From Nothing
  2. The Feast and The Famine
  3. Congregation
  4. What Did I Do?/God As My Witness
  5. Outside
  6. In The Clear
  7. Subterranean
  8. I Am A River

The album has overwhelmingly good reviews with a 4.6/5 star rating on Google Play with over 4000 reviews. One reviewer said:

Pure class again How the foo’s keep delivering more and better just defies belief. Dave didn’t just pop in the studio and presto another album of more the same, its a masterpiece of musical depth inspired from his road trip for the American Rock …

I listened to a few songs including the popular Something From Nothing but they are just not my cup of rock. However, if they are your cup of rock, then this is a fantastic deal you will not want to miss out on. You can preview each and every song before purchasing the album if you want to get a feel for their music. I do have to say that these Google Play album deals are super sweet and I cannot wait to see what they offer next.

Hey Moosers, do you like Foo Fighters? If so, what is your favourite song?

60-Day Free Trial of Google Play Music

Posted by on July 5, 2015 at 6:30 PM

60 Day Free Trial of Google Play Music

As if in response to Apple Music finally moving to Canada, Google Play Music has doubled their 30 day trial to a 60 day trial. Receive two months of free music streaming and more from Google Play.

There are two different versions of Google Play Music. First is the ‘free’ version and the second is the ‘unlimited’ version. If I understand correctly, this promotion is for a 60-day free trial of Google Play Music Unlimited, which includes many lucrative features.

First, Google play Music allows you to store up to 50,000 of your iTunes songs and listen to them on any device: tablet, smart phone, or computer. You will also receive recommendations based upon your taste.

Secondly, Google unlimited offers you on-demand access to over 30 million songs for your listening pleasure. You can download songs to play when you are not connected to the internet. These songs will play add-free. Enjoy your own curated radio station with unlimited skipping songs. Receive recommendations based upon your specific music tastes as well. here is a quick info-graph on the difference between the free Google Play app you download and a Google Play Music Unlimited subscription:

60 Day Free Trial of Google Play Music

Now, your free trial lasts for 60-days at which point it will cost $9.99 per month to continue your subscription.

I think of Google Play Music Unlimited as sort of a cross between Apple Match ($27.99/yr) and Apple Music ($9.99/m)… I do think this promo is directly in response to Apple Canada’s recent offer for three months free trial of their music subscription service.

I think this offer is ideal for Android phone users as Apple has not yet created an iTunes for Android, yet! This is a great way to get music off the iTunes on your computer and playable on all your devices. With support for up to 50,000 songs plus plenty of access to online (and offline) streaming, you really cannot go wrong with a deal like this from Google Play.

If you have the Google Play Music Unlimited account, then let us know what you think of it! We are always eager to hear user views on tech and software.

Google Play: Walk Off The Earth “Sing It All Away” Album Now 99 Cents

Posted by on July 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM

Google Play: Walk Off The Earth “Sing It All Away” Album Now 99 Cents

We have seen a lot of great music from Google Play lately, but this is the first time I have seen a Canadian band’s album at a steal of a price. Check out the band Walk Off The Earth’s album Sing It All The Way. This album is normally $9.99, but you can grab it right now for only 99 cents at Google Play.

At first, I was excited to check out this band’s music because it is a Canadian band. Not only do I love supporting music that is regional, it also means I have a much better chance of seeing them live in concert! In all seriousness, when I started clicking around on the tracks of the album, I realized I knew the song Rule The World from the either the radio or one of my free streaming programs and the song is awesome! If you need a peppy and empowering song, this is it. While I can sing along to this song on the radio or while I am working out, I also think I would turn on this song when I am trying to focus or motivate myself. This song has a peppy undertone that reminds me of bands such as Foster and The People or Florence and The Machine

Itunes is selling this album for $9.99 and is also selling each individual track for $1.29. You are much better off just purchasing the entire album on Google Play.

Reviews are looking amazing on Google play for this album. Many people are digging this band’s sound. Here is one happy music listener.

Stuck in my head seriously blown away by this album. Great work. Songs will be stuck in my head for a long time. Cheers

Another happy listener mentions that this band does some awesome covers. You can listen to their covers yourself on YouTube, such as this peppy cover of Grenade by Bruno Mars. They are quite fantastic!

If you are in Brampton Ontario, this fantastic band is performing for Canada Day free at Ching Park. They will be headlining at 8:30 pm, and there are many free activities scheduled weather permitting. There is also one other chance to pick up tickets to catch them in concert in September in BC before they head out for a tour across Europe. Fans are saying this band is even better in concert and it seems like they do a great show.  I would try to catch them live if I lived close enough, I love their sound. If you are like me and too far away, make sure to pick up the album so you can dance to it in your own backyard instead. Check out this music video the band made with the song Rule the World.

Google Play: Just The Hits 19 Track Album Only 99 Cents!

Posted by on June 25, 2015 at 8:27 AM

Google Play: Just The Hits 19 Track Album Only 99 Cents!

Embrace some of the best songs of last year by taking them with you on your own device. Right now Google Play is offering the album Just The Hits for only 99¢! This album is valued at $24.51, and will make a great soundtrack to listen to all summer.

While I stream music most of the time and it is tailored to my personal music tastes, it is hard to escape some of the top hits of the past year. I turn on pop music quite a bit when I am feeling fun and breezy, or want to lift my mood. This album is the perfect dependable playlist of music that will also please a crowd, a great choice for your next backyard gathering or beach trip.

This album includes 19 total songs, all from different artists. These tracks are selling for $1.29 per track. A few tracks are only sold as part of their original album but are still available to purchase individually from the original album. Here is a sampling of some of the great music you will find on this album.

  • Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars
  • Take Me to Church by Hozier
  • Lips Are Movin by Meghan Trainor
  • Don’t by Ed Sheeran
  • Time of Our Lives by Pitbull & Ne-Yo
  • Jealous (Remix) by Nick Jonas feat. Tinashe
  • Outside by Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding
  • Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson

I headed over to iTunes to price compare. Many of these songs are available for $1.29 if you were to purchase them individually. If you were to purchase this entire album you will spend $9.99. This is a way better deal on Google Play.

I myself find myself always stopping to listen to Take Me To Church by Hozier. This artist is fairly new on the scene. Take Me to Church is his breakout song that is soaring on charts in multiple countries. The song stems from his frustration with the Catholic Church and their teachings on love and sexuality. His music video on You Tube went viral and received 200,000 views in two weeks. The topic of this song is not as perky as some of the other pop music available on this album, but it is an awesome song. The lyrics in this song are thought provoking if you listen a little deeper and hauntingly beautiful if you only listen passively.

If you are looking for another tune that is catchy and upbeat with a lighter feel, do not miss Budapest by George Ezra hanging out towards the bottom of the list. This song is in part a love song, as Ezra asks the love in his life to move on to the next step with him. Whether that next step is dating or something more serious, this catchy song is easy to crone along to in the car.

There are many other great songs on this list. Google Play does let you sample on the left side of each song. I always find that handy when I cannot remember if I know a song or not. This album is only available for the week, but Google has not been forthcoming when exactly the deal is up. Grab these songs now. This is a serious deal for these great tunes!

Google Play: Royal Blood Self-Titled Album only 99¢

Posted by on June 9, 2015 at 7:37 PM

Google Play: Royal Blood Self Titled Album only 99¢

The Google Play store has a new album for only 99¢ this week. Pick up Royal Blood’s self-titled album Royal Blood for only 99¢.

I like these 99¢ album deals as we do not often have good deals on music since music went digital. iTunes stopped giving away a free song each week and even cancelled their Christmas 12 Days giveaway. Since then, iTunes has had very few sales worth noting.

In steps Google Play. They have weekly 99¢ albums for some popular and some new artists. This is a great way to get your favourites or pick up a new artist and try them out. They also have a small section of free music that is worth frequenting often for updated titles. iTunes -1, Google Play +1!

The Royal Blood album costs $7.99 on iTunes Canada. Thus, you are saving $7 when purchasing via the Google Play store. The album has 10 songs including their most popular: Figure it Out. At this price, you are paying less than 10 cents per song.

I assume this is the full ‘explicit’ copy but Google Play does not specify. There is a non-explicit version available on iTunes, so i am curious which version is being sold by Google.

The reviews are pretty good. One reviewer said:

Finally. Real rock. It’s been a while since we’ve had a new rock band of this quality. Reminds me of queens of the stone age and the white stripes. These guys are going to be huge.

I still find that the band tends towards pop rock, but I only listened to a couple songs. Those might just have been anomalies. Of course, rock is so varied (always has been) that these boys certainly classify. Another reviewer said:

Finally! So amazing to hear new ‘alt-rock’ music that truly focuses on the rock part! Great bassist/drummer duo outta England. Can’t wait to catch them live in Mpls this month.

Most the rockers I like are UK based: I think England does rock better (Pink Floyd, Beatles, etc!). This is a generous price for their new album so pick it up now! I am not sure exactly when the Google Play ‘week’ starts, thus I am not sure when this deal expires.

Google Play: Meghan Trainor’s Album Title Only 99¢

Posted by on June 8, 2015 at 6:00 PM

Google Play: Meghan Trainors Album Title Only 99¢

I love music and Meghan Trainor has caught my ear. The first song I heard of hers was “All About that Bass” – I was linked to the music video on YouTube by a friend. The song is super catchy and I loved the video too. Google Play has a special promotion on right now. Purchase the entire ‘Title’ album for just 99¢!

This album has 15 songs, all of which retail for $1.29 individually. I assess from iTunes that the album being offered from Google Play is indeed the ‘deluxe’ album as the deluxe album comes with 15 songs and the normal album has 11 songs. You can also double-check this on Wikipedia. I price compared with iTunes where the deluxe album retails for $12.99. To purchase each song separately, you would pay $1.29 as well. You are saving at least $12 with this deal.

Essentially, you receive 15 songs for the price of less than one song. WOW.

I recently saw Meghan Trainor perform live at The Voice final. She performed “Dear Future Husband” in front of a crowded audience and the contestants. While the song didn’t strike me at first, since I have listened to it a few more times.

I like how Meghan’s songs are often a middle-finger up to current society trends and stereotyping. She really battles against fat-shaming and the way mothers raise their daughters to base their value on appearance. However, I think she can go a bit far. Sometimes she starts ‘shaming the other’ as a way to promote the underdog. I am not for that method, but I understand why she does it. The power is in the lyrics. She does this in her Future Husband song as well, where she really asserts female rights but somewhat tramples upon male ones at the same time.

This is a fantastic deal, and you really should purchase it before it disappears. I have no idea how long this deal will last. Most these deals, if experience says anything, only last for a week at most. If you want a preview of the album to see if you like Meghan, check out this song:

Amazon Canada is having some super deals on a few rock music boxed sets. I spotted the Kings of Leon set for only $24.99. This item qualifies for free super saver shipping with a minimum purchase of $25.

Kings of Leon is a favourite among the rock and pop hits. The songs get stuck in your head, and you find yourself singing along for weeks at a time. Put some tunes to your humming with this awesome boxed set.

When you start price matching this box set across the web, you really start seeing the savings. Over at, this boxed set costs $62.97. I also found this CD boxed set at Best Buy Canada for $62.99. Best Buy will let you sample some of the tracks from your browser, so click on over for a full preview of this album.

Reviews on Amazon are praising this album for the fantastic music. Several reviewers talk about how they listen to these albums multiple times, and how some of the songs are catchy right away and other songs you find yourself hooked a week later. This band also experiments with their sound, and listeners love it.

If you are looking for other cool music to fill out your cart, has discounted a few other boxed CD sets today. Bruce Springsteen fans will be happy to see the Born To Run 30th Anniversary 3 disc set on sale for only $26.99. This same set at will cost you $64.97, so you are saving quite a bit. This set is a re-mastered version of Springsteen’s earlier work including four hours of footage of their London show. Featured songs include “Thunder Road,” “Kitty’s Back,” and a fantastic rendition of “Saint in the City.”

I also like the Best of My Lives Boxed Set by Billy Joel selling today for $26.99. Pick this same set up at Best and you will drop $72.99. This is a five disc set including four CDs chock full of classic hits and a DVD that showcases five hours of music, previously unreleased tunes and even a few covers. If you need a filler for free shipping on the Kings of Leon album, check out the Jurassic Dinosaurs Sticker Activity Book. This fun sticker book is only $2. This would be a great little project for the kids, dad or me! I have another sticker book made by this same company, and they are fun little books.

These fab music sales are only good today, so snap up your favourites now. This is a great potential Father’s Day gift. Both my husband and my dad would find music they enjoyed among these boxed sets.

Spotify: 3 Months Premium only 99¢ (Worth $29.97)

Posted by on May 9, 2015 at 11:00 AM

Spotify: 3 Months Premium only 99¢ (Worth $29.97)

Spotify hosts millions of music tracks that you can stream on your computer, tablet, phone, and more. While Spotify basic is free, Spotify premium usually costs $9.99 per month. Right now, Spotify is offering three months of its premium service for just 99¢, which works out to 33¢ per month. You save $29.97 over three months.

Let us talk differences. There is a basic Spotify program you can use free of charge. That program gives you access to millions of music tracks for free. Create your own radio station, adopt the playlists of celebrities or friends, or shuffle play any artist or playlist. The basic Spotify has ads and only allows you to skip six times per hour on your mobile. In addition, you cannot download anything: you must be constantly online.

Spotify Premium

Spotify premium is an entirely different kettle of fish. You can play any music on-demand instead of using shuffled playlists or artists. You can also listen offline (download the songs) so no internet connection is needed. Premium members benefit from unlimited skips and better sound quality: 320 kbps instead of 160 kbps. On top of that, premium is ad-free and you can play Spotify on your home speakers instead of just on your mobile devices.

If you do not wish to continue with Spotify Premium after the 99¢ trial period, then you will need to cancel your membership as right before the three-months are up. If you do not, then your credit card will be automatically billed the full $9.99 for the next month. This is an introductory promotion from Spotify. Thus, anyone who has previously had a trial with Spotify or previously been subscribed to the Spotify Premium service is not eligible for this promotion.

I think this is a very interesting service. I am going to be driving a grand total of 24 hours minimum in May. That is excluding two ferry rides. Sometimes I get bored of my own music selection and want something new. Spotify Premium would allow me to download new stuff to my iPhone. Because Premium does not require an internet connection to listen, it would keep me company through the BC interior where most cell phones lose any reception and radio stations die.

I do not know when this promotion ends, so please take advantage of it sooner rather than later.

Buytopia Canada: 75% Off Portable MP3 Player – Now Just $10

Posted by on April 22, 2015 at 6:10 PM

Buytopia Canada: 75% Off Portable MP3 Player Now Just $10

Buytopia has a fantastic deal right now: you can get a portable MP3 player with a built-in USB drive for just $10, which is a 75% reduction from its original $40 price.

You can get this handy MP3 player in the following choices of colours: red, blue or black. Earphones are pictured in Buytopia’s image of this product, which you can see above, but there is no mention as to whether these are actually included or not.

I’m sure many of you are wondering about the storage, but oddly enough, Buytopia doesn’t list the memory capacity.

If you look at a close up of this portable MP3 player on Buytopia’s site, then you will also see that it says: “MIC” on the side. This makes me think that there might be recording feature but this too isn’t mentioned in Buytopia’s description.

To add your music, you will simply need to plug the USB into your computer and transfer away. Since it is a USB drive, you might also be able to store a couple of files but you would have to try it to see.

This Buytopia deal is set to expire in 3 days from now, which according to my calculations, should be on Friday, April 24th but Buytpoia’s deals don’t always expire when they are set to. So if you are interested in this deal, first all, don’t delay as it might sell out and second of all, don’t wait until the very last day either. There are good chances that this deal will be extended past the “3 days remaining” as it happens with a lot of their deals, but you just never know!

The only downside to this offer is that shipping is $4.95 but even then, it’s a pretty awesome deal, especially since taxes are already included. Keep in mind that the way Buytopia’s site operates is that your item will ship 4-6 weeks after the deal ends on their site, so you won’t necessarily get it right away. If it does end within the next couple of days, then you can expect your order in May, but hopefully well before that of course!

Google Play Store: Free Music from Nickelback, Maroon 5, & More

Google Play Store: Free Music from Nickelback, Maroon 5, & More

The Google Play store has a bunch of free music you can download right now. I found a few completely free albums and a bunch of single songs just free for the taking. Hurry on over as I have no idea how long this offer with last.

I am not familiar with all these artists so I really cannot make recommendations (for most of it) on what is good or not. Music is also highly subjective, so what I like you may think is trash. Here are the albums you can download for free:

Here is a list of the individual tracks you can download for free at the Google Play Store:

As you can see, this is a lengthy list. If you are open to different music genres, then you can download 63 tracks through the above links. That is a hefty freebie when you consider that Google Play Store has a flat rate of $1.29 per song (or better price for albums).

I do not know any of the other artists or bands besides Nickelback and Maroon 5. I might experiment a bit, but I know for sure that I am downloading the Maps song by Maroon 5 and the What Are You Waiting For? song by Nickelback. Those tracks are worth my time to sign in (or sign up) for a Google Play store account. In fact, there are ridiculously good reviews for the new Maroon 5 song. This reviewer gushed:

Adam kills it! I’m not the one to listen to the newest music let alone buy the track only after listening to it only ONCE on the radio. “ain’t nothin I can do” but listen to it on repeat!

If you know some of the other bands, then please drop us a line to give your song recommendations. I love music, but we all have our expertise and certain genres that we are more familiar with than other people.

Google Play Store: 88 Billie Holiday Songs for $1.99

Posted by on March 17, 2015 at 3:49 PM

Google Play Store: 88 Billie Holiday Songs for $1.99

Google Play Store has an entire collection of Billie Holiday songs on promotion for just $1.99. Each song would regularly cost $1.29, so this is one heck of a deal.

At this price, you will pay just over 2¢ per song. Even if you just like a couple Billie Holiday songs, at this price it is worth purchasing the entire collection. Just for a little fun with math, if you purchased all 88 songs at their retail price of $1.29, then you would be spending $113.52. That is a lot of money!

Now, I know a bit of Billie Holiday but I am no means an expert. She was an American Jazz singer with quite the voice. While the recording is a bit dated, I find the music pleasant to listen to when in the mood. I generally like a little sprinkle of jazz in the evenings or around dinnertime as background music. It is sultry, relaxing, and elegant all at the same time.

Enjoy such songs as:

  • Easy Living
  • God Bless The Child
  • Solitude
  • I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues
  • Strange Fruit

I think I only have heard one or two of her songs before. However, I listened to the preview of about 10 of these songs before I started this blog post. Her music is quite enjoyable and I hope many of our Moosers like this little deal.

Strange Fruit has a bit of a story behind it. This song deals with racial hatred at a time when speaking about it, especially if you were African American, was taboo and could get you beaten or killed. As one NY Times article says:

“Strange Fruit” became a nightly ritual for Holiday, then one of her most successful records, then one of her signature songs, at least in those places where it was safe to perform. For throughout Holiday’s short life—she died in 1939 at the age of forty-four—the song existed in a kind of artistic quarantine: it could travel, but only to selected places.

It is a song that continues to be revered as it was bold for that time period and is still relevant today when racial prejudices and hatred still continue. This song is unique in her discography, and it requires a couple listens to understand.

Pick up all these songs and more for just $1.99. As the music is digital, no shipping costs either!
