MBNA Smart Cash Mastercard: 5% Cash Back on Qualifying Purchases for 6 Months

MBNA Smart Cash Mastercard: 5% Cash Back on Qualifying Purchases for 6 Months

There’s nothing like getting money just for spending money! Do exactly that with MBNA’s Smart Cash MasterCard.

Before I say anything else I want to point out that credit cards can be dangerous. It’s easy to get in way over your head with credit card debt so only get a credit card if you’re responsible enough to manage it.

But if you are going to get a credit card, you might as well get a cash back card. I have one and it’s great. I almost never use it but I should probably start using it. I get more cash back on gas and food so even if I started using it just for that I’d probably get more. MBNA has a deal right now that lets you get 5% cash back on eligible grocery and gas purchases for the first six months. After that you get 2% on gas and groceries and 1% on everything else. You also get 1.99% interest on balance transfers and deposits for the first ten months.

I did some quick calculations and based on my average gas and grocery expenditure I could make $300 using this card! If you have multiple cars, long commutes, big families, etc., you can get even more. If you’re really disciplined and you always pay off your balance before they charge you interest you can make a good chunk of money off of this thing. They send you a cheque any time your balance gets over $50.

BMO Canada: 2 No-Fee Student Credit Cards With Rewards

BMO Canada: 2 No Fee Student Credit Cards With Rewards

I am totally getting back into student mode! I just read the first of my books for school last night and started another (which is not going well). I am also in full student deal mode and found some offers from BMO that I never knew existed! BMO has two no-annual-fee credit cards for students that give back rewards. Both also act as an SPC Card (student price card which you usually buy for $10) so you get the added discounts and bonuses associated with those as well.

BMO Canada: 2 No Fee Student Credit Cards With RewardsThe first card is the BMO SPC AIR MILES MasterCard where you earn air miles on your purchases. Here are the rewards:

  • 500 Bonus reward miles (limited time offer) – Apply by August 31st and spend $200 by October 31st, 2013
  • One AIR MILES reward mile for every $20 you spend on the card
  • SPC (Student Price Card Ltd.) discounts of 10% to 15% at hundreds of stores
  • Earn 1.25x reward miles at Shell locations in Canada
  • Earn 1.5x reward miles and get up to 25% off rentals at National Car Rental & Alamo Rent A Car locations worldwide

All that with no annual fee. If you go to school away from home and travel back for the breaks, it might be a good idea to get some extra air miles with this card.

The second card is the BMO SPC CashBack MasterCard which tends to be my favourite. I love cash back! Here are the rewards:

  • An annual rebate to your credit card: $1 cash back for every $200 spent on your card (= 0.5% cashback rate)
  • SPC (Student Price Card Ltd.) discounts of 10% to 15% at hundreds of stores
  • Earn 1.25x reward miles at Shell locations in Canada
  • Earn 1.5x reward miles and get up to 25% off rentals at National Car Rental& Alamo Rent A Car locations worldwide

Again, this credit card is a no-annual-fee card. I am currently on a cash rebate system with a different credit card company and it has been my favourite so far.

I like their little comparison charts at the bottom. It shows you how much you will earn in either air miles or cash-back depending on what you spend a month. For example, if you spend around $1000 a month you can either get 1,100 air miles in a year or $60 back a year.

MBNA Canada: Sony Google TV Just for Using Your New Sony Mastercard

MBNA Canada: Sony Google TV Just for Using Your New Sony Mastercard

Anyone need a new credit card? If so, you might as well get a free Google TV when you get your new one. What? You don’t have one yet? Well, if you are in the market for a new card, why not make it this one?

I played up the credit card thing in the first paragraph there but I feel like I should caution you about credit cards. We are a money saving website and getting a credit card is NOT a good way to save money. Trust me on this, I had to do some pretty drastic stuff to get me out of debt and a credit card was a bit part of that debt. If I had been smart and either never gotten a CC or kept a super low limit, I would never have gotten into the mess I was in.

From here on out I’m going to talk about how great this credit card is, but just remember my warning and please be smart about this.

The special promo for the launch of this card is actually pretty cool. If you make $150 in qualifying retail purchases before 30th October 2012 you get a Sony Internet Player with Google TV. Nothing wrong with that, right?

These are the benefits of the Sony MasterCard. It seems like if you are a Sony die hard fanboy then this is the card for you.

  • Earn Sony Points on qualifying net retail purchases made using your Sony Card MasterCard
  • Get 2,000 Sony Points after your first qualifying transaction
  • Earn Double Sony Points with every qualifying net retail purchase of Sony products at SonyStyle.ca or the Sony store/ Maison Sony
  • Redeem Sony Points toward any Sony product at SonyStyle.ca
  • Browse through the complete SonyStyle.ca catalogue including PlayStation Games, VAIO Wireless Notebooks, BRAVIA LCD Televisions, MP3 Walkman Digital Music Players, movies, software, media and so much more!
  • Enhanced security and protection with Chip & PIN technology and PayPass
