I always like to read a book before watching the movie – it’s just always better! The Descendants: A Novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings is on sale for $7.06 (reg.$10.09). A reviewer writes:
I’m not sure where this author came from, but look out! Her characters are in your FACE–funny and scary–with an emotional swirl in the background that makes it hard to breathe. The premise, which is almost beside the point, is that Matthew King’s wife is in a coma. And he has to rise up to the occasion, and be a parent in a way he never was before. You realize, along with him, that these wild, angry girls never really had a parent of any kind.
There is a limit of one coupon per customer. Thanks to Celia for posting this on the hot deals forum!
Exclusions “Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Wiley, and Zondervan, and all respective subsidiary imprints”as well as magazines and newspapers.

My comparative literature teacher, who writes a blog called Steampunk Scholar, and I recently had a conversation regarding the availability of books we want to read as ebooks. I want to read the Vampire Empire series however the first book is available in german via Kobobooks (so have a blast if you read german!), but neither the 1st nor the 2nd is available in english. His reply was this:

I find the availability of ebooks somewhat frustrating. I understand the why of it: it’s all about contractual obligations and licensing, but it’s still somewhat maddening. There’s a book by a Canadian author that is available as an ebook from Kindle in the States, but not in Canada. Go figure! Avigayil, I endorse both Vampire Empire books!

    Anyone else have this problem?

What new book are you looking for? I have been rather interested in vintage lately, because I know little about it and it seems to be a really promising area to explore if you can find a good tailor. You get really fantastic clothing with good fabric and excellent construction – and then you bring it to life. I recently got the book Virtual Vintage: The Insider’s Guide to Buying and Selling Fashion Online and hope to get to it one of these days!

I just used this gorgeous coupon to get a book I have been wanting: No More Dirty Looks. It is a very revealing look at the beauty industry and the regulations (or lack there of – really) keeping our beauty products safe. I know, I have funny tastes in my relaxation reading material! Anyway, I got it for a fabulous price: $7.12 (including GST), saving $2.91 with this coupon.

My friend was so excited to get the new Kobo Vox yesterday. It looks like a nice ereader, love that it’s in colour and I think the fact that you can browse the web, do email and Facebook on it makes it so useful, especially if you don’t have an iPad or other tablet.

I’d say that my next ebook will be Half-Blood Blues by Giller winner Esi Edugyan. It’s priced at $14.99 or $11.99 after coupon.

I read an article somewhere that was talking about the market distribution of eReaders and if memory serves Kindle has the largest share. I was wondering how that distribution would look if you only took Canada into consideration. Because Chapters (and thus the Kobo) is not in the US of A the market down there is remarkably different. However, I wonder what our percentage looks like for owners of readers here. What do you think? I was thinking around 50% Kobo, 30% Kindle and 20% other.. but that is our speculation. As per usual the fine print is very important. This coupon excludes the following publishers:

In CA – Zondervan, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group, Penguin, Wiley, and Macmillan.

It also excludes the usual magazines and newspapers.

I am currently reading The Epic of Gilgamesh for my Comparative Literature course. It is the oldest ‘heroic epic’ we (humans) have. Many people find it dry but I find it great actually, quite fascinating how themes from life that we struggle with today like friendship, being content in life, and the concept of death are the same concepts they struggled with way back about 2700 BC. Try it out if you like literature or history. I found this version from Penguin on Kobobooks, The Epic of Gilgamesh, only $9.29, or $8.29 after the coupon code. Oddly enough the coupon code works on this Penguin book.

I don’t really have time to read right now! But I do have a great Kobobooks story. I purchased a book about 2 months ago that was terribly messed up. Images and tables were missing everywhere. So I ‘reported’ the book to Kobobooks. They responded saying they would look into it. A couple weeks later I got a reply saying I was right, and they refunded the money I paid for it as credit on Kobobooks. I was sceptical as to how it would turn out because it took them a while to solve my issue – but in the end everything was peachy!

Now, I am usually a big fan of Kobobooks. However, I recently bought a book called Underneath it All by Caroll & Schultz. A great book for lingerie fans! I get to reading this book and the images are all wrong (reading on an iPad). Each section that describes the difference between items (like demi-bra, t-shirt bra) etc is suppose to have a picture showing it. The pictures are ALL the the same. Also: The tables that are in one of the chapters of the books (pages 43 – 47 or so) all have the same table repeated over and over and over on each page. It is suppose to be a whole bunch of different tables! I am very disappointed with the quality of this ebook and have emailed Kobo support about it. We will see what their response is.
