I had totally given up my own personal reading for the last while, due to way too many textbooks to read and not enough time! Recently I was given the opportunity to get a free book and review it for a blog I follow called Steampunk Scholar. Have you ever gifted an ebook? I have noticed this “send this book as an e-gift” and thought about doing it, as long as I know the person has a way to read the book. I have a comparative literature professor I think is fabulous, and this will be my last semester learning from him – so I was thinking of gifting him a few books: maybe even Steampunk: Poe.

So what is on your reading list? I have seen so many books floating around campus lately: The Hunger Games are really popular, and I still see Room by Emma Donoghue hanging around. I have never read it, but it was extremely popular when it came out.

What book have you read recently that you would recommend?

I’m not sure where this author came from, but look out! Her characters are in your FACE–funny and scary–with an emotional swirl in the background that makes it hard to breathe. The premise, which is almost beside the point, is that Matthew King’s wife is in a coma. And he has to rise up to the occasion, and be a parent in a way he never was before. You realize, along with him, that these wild, angry girls never really had a parent of any kind.

My comparative literature teacher, who writes a blog called Steampunk Scholar, and I recently had a conversation regarding the availability of books we want to read as ebooks. I want to read the Vampire Empire series however the first book is available in german via Kobobooks (so have a blast if you read german!), but neither the 1st nor the 2nd is available in english. His reply was this:

I find the availability of ebooks somewhat frustrating. I understand the why of it: it’s all about contractual obligations and licensing, but it’s still somewhat maddening. There’s a book by a Canadian author that is available as an ebook from Kindle in the States, but not in Canada. Go figure! Avigayil, I endorse both Vampire Empire books!

Anyone else have this problem?

What new book are you looking for? I have been rather interested in vintage lately, because I know little about it and it seems to be a really promising area to explore if you can find a good tailor. You get really fantastic clothing with good fabric and excellent construction – and then you bring it to life. I recently got the book Virtual Vintage: The Insider’s Guide to Buying and Selling Fashion Online and hope to get to it one of these days!

My friend was so excited to get the new Kobo Vox yesterday. It looks like a nice ereader, love that it’s in colour and I think the fact that you can browse the web, do email and Facebook on it makes it so useful, especially if you don’t have an iPad or other tablet.
