Home Depot: 20% Off all Indoor Plants

Home Depot: 20% Off all Indoor Plants

I am far from a green thumb, but I confess we try and keep 3 plants alive in our south-ish facing apartment. It is just so nice to have something alive and green that isn’t mold in our house! I am sure people share my sentiment so I am sharing Home Depot’s sale on indoor plants. Unfortunately this is in-store only, but who really thinks their plant would survive being delivered… seriously?

This sale starts Thursday and goes for a week. The indoor plant sale also includes Orchids, I’m not sure why they single them out as I have never seen an Orchid that could happily survive outside in Canadian weather, but they do! I love orchids, dendrobium orchids are my favorite flowers. Yes I had to memorize that word years ago. Home Depot: 20% Off all Indoor Plants I have included a picture of my favorite flower above so you can see why I love them.

Home Outfitters Deal: $29 Zero Gravity Loungers

I saw this deal in the last email newsletter from Home Outfitters Canada. This weekend, they are selling their Zero Gravity loungers for only $29.99! These chairs are normally priced at $69.99 to $99.99.

Also, this Friday 18th to Sunday the 20th of June 2010, you can get an extra 15% off your purchase when you pay with a HBC Mastercard or a HBC credit card.

I think the loungers look pretty comfy, and if you are looking for a pretty cheap option for some seating in your garden, then these would be a good bet.

Home Depot Coupon: BOGO Free On Annual Plants

Home Depot Canada has just emailed a new coupon to their garden club members.

The printable coupon will enable you to buy 1 get 1 free on all their annual plants. I had to ask my co-writer Avigayil what an annual plant was, as I am a plant-killer and don’t have green-fingers at all! Here’s what she says:

An annual grows from seed and blooms and sets seed and then dies in just one growing season. It doesn’t come back.

You learn something new every day, eh?

Bookcloseouts Canada: 20% Off Gardening Books!

Posted by Anna Waters on February 23, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Bookcloseouts Canada: 20% Off Gardening Books!

Another month, another new promotion from Bookcloseouts Canada. This time, it’s a sale on their gardening books! As Yanyi mentioned earlier, spring is nearly upon us, and that’s a time when many people resurrect their gardening tools from the shed. But if you’re not green fingered already, it’s nice to have a book to point you in the right direction.

Bookcloseouts has a sale on their gardening books. There are literally hundreds of books to choose from, about perennials, poppies, palms, ponds, plants & more!

I personally don’t know my hyacinths from my hydrangias, but gardening has never really appealed to me. I suppose I am too impatient to put time into something like that, and not see a huge benefit from it. I like sitting in the garden, yes… but I am more than happy to watch someone else do the digging!

Recession Gardening: Grow Your Own Herbs!

Posted by Anna Waters on May 16, 2009 at 5:29 AM

Recession Gardening: Grow Your Own Herbs!I love cooking and trying out new recipes from my ever-growing collection of recipe books. Sometimes the recipes call for exciting and interesting fresh herbs, which I have to go out and buy. Now, in these times of crunching credit, a new hobby has come about – recession gardening! It’s simply the practice of growing your own herbs or vegetables, in your own home garden. This should save you some money (perhaps not in the short term) and you’ll get delicious fresh produce to eat! Plus, when you’re trying out those new, exciting recipes, you’ll have the fresh herbs close to hand, in your personal herb garden. Recession Gardening: Grow Your Own Herbs!

For those of you who are green-minded, you can be safe in the knowledge that your own home-grown produce is wholly organic, with no nasty pesticides or chemicals thrown into the mix.

I was googling and I found this longer article on mymoneyblog.com, which tells you a bit more about the practice of the “recession garden”, or the “depression garden.” They talk about how they started out in one medium size pot, and have expanded to include bits and pieces in their patio too.

Depending on what space you have available, you could think about where the best place would be to start. For example, you could perhaps create a small herb pot in a hanging basket in your porch. Not only have you fresh herbs to hand for all your gorgeous culinary creations, but the guests arriving at your house get a wonderful aroma as they are coming to the door. Recession Gardening: Grow Your Own Herbs!

Alternatively, you can make herb gardens out of window boxes. When you open your windows to get some fresh air into your house, the delicious herby smells would waft through the house too. Then when you are cooking, you can just reach out and grab a lovely handful of herbs for your meals! I reckon that the best sort of herbs for planting in this fashion would be thyme, rosemary, parsley, basil.

If you have a big garden and you’re not stuck for space, simply plant whatever you want! Instead of just herbs, you could plant various vegetables and even fruits. My mom has a really big garden, and she has started to grow a plethora of plants. I have to say that the yummiest are the fresh potatoes, in the summer. They’re big and floury, you slather them in butter and they are just melt in your mouth. Don’t mention the fresh rhubarb and ginger jam though – it’s delectable!

If you’re not very green-fingered but would like to give this a try, there is a wealth of gardening information at your fingertips – here on the world wide web. Just google for what you need, and you can find help at any hour of the day or night! With a smallish initial outlay, you can save yourself a few bucks over the years to come, with your home-grown produce!
