Only the black flashlight is discounted this steeply with others retailing for a couple dollars more. I think this is a really cool item because you are paying less than $5 for a flashlight, rechargeable battery, and a charger for the battery. Read the rest of this entry »

3 Tips To Save Money On Your Next Camping Trip

Posted by on July 14, 2015 at 8:00 PM

3 Tips To Save Money On Your Next Camping Trip

Camping is still a very economical way to take a vacation and unwind. According to Smart Family Finance, the average family camping trip costs $380. That does not account for what gear you may or may not already own and is a rough estimate. In comparison with the $2,000 to $4,000 that Vacation Kids suggests is the average family budget for a vacation, camping is quite a bargain deal. If you are pinching your pennies, these tips below for beginners can help you avoid those extra costs that are not necessary and inflate your budget.

Go Easy On Gear

Gear is an investment, and one that most savvy campers add a little every year. Cost Helper Fitness estimates a family of four will spend $300 to $500 for beginner level gear to camp out of your car, assuming you have no gear to begin with. If you choose to buy high-end gear, that same family could spend as much as $1,000 to $2,500.  Included in those costs are the following basic items.

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bags with pads and/or folding cots
  • Stove
  • Lantern or Flashlight
  • Cooler

If you can, borrow gear from friends or family members. I used to camp quite a bit, but do not currently own much gear. I have friends who camp also but will not spend the entire summer camping. By borrowing a few basics from my friends, I can save several hundred dollars on items that are sitting in storage anyways.

You can also check Bargainmoose for deals on gear, as we post them when we find them. Keep a running list of items you would like this year, and buy them at the end of the season to make next year’s camping trip more pleasant.

One last option is to consider renting gear. Some of the gear stores such as MEC Canada offer programs where you can rent gear. This can tide you over for a trip or two without having to invest big buck on pricey gear. It can also allow you to try out something new before you consider purchasing it.

Pack Your Cooler With Larger Chunks Of Ice

3 Tips To Save Money On Your Next Camping Trip

Ice from the grocery does not cost very much, usually $2-$3 for a reasonably sized bag. If you fill your cooler full of ice from the grocery, your ice can melt much more quickly than if you have larger chunks of ice. That means at best you could find yourself picking up ice several times during your trip. At worst, your food could spoil causing you to rebuy your food or end up with food poisoning.

You can save yourself the trouble by freezing large half-full bottles of water to stock up your cooler. Make sure not to freeze them with the bottle completely full, as the bottle will burst. These bottles cannot only help keep your cooler cold, it also provides drinking water as they melt. You can also freeze some of your food ahead of time to help preserve it. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and other meats are great choices to freeze ahead of time. If you can, pack food in a separate cooler from drinks. We tend to open the drinks cooler much more frequently, and packing food separately can help ensure your food stays cold and does not spoil.

Shop Your Own Pantry

Before you head out to the campground, make sure you shop your own pantry for items. Making and bringing food from home can save you big money. You can prepare some pre-made meals ahead of time such as stew or spaghetti sauce, and you may even already have some in your freezer. Make sure to include items such as spices, ketchup, mustard and other condiments you might like on your trip. Small sizes of these condiments cost premium prices at campsites or at the small grocery stores nearby. Save yourself the cash and bring some from your fridge.

Shop Your Own Medicine Cabinet and Home

3 Tips To Save Money On Your Next Camping Trip

This is along the same lines, but make sure to pack medical supplies. Bandaids, basic pain medication, cotton gauze and other medical supplies also cost a small fortune at the small camping stores. Bring some from home and save yourself from those ridiculously high prices. Also, do not forget bug spray, sunscreen and any pain relief you prefer such Aloe Vera gel or Benadryl. You will thank me when that bug bite and sunburn are painful at 2 am. Here are other items you can bring from home and save yourself the trouble of rebuying at higher prices.

  • Duct Tape
  • Roll of Nylon Rope
  • Pillows
  • Paper Towels
  • Trash Bags
  • Dish Soap
  • Cooking Oil
  • Cutting Board and Knife

For a full checklist of suggestions of items to bring with you camping, check out this list from Love The Outdoors. I find this list is rather exhaustive but includes many of the items you need. Choose carefully what you might need before you enjoy the great outdoors. Many extra items can drag on your gas costs if your car is stuffed full.

MEC Canada: Free Shipping With No Minimum This Weekend (EXPIRED)

MEC Canada: Free Shipping With No Minimum This Weekend (EXPIRED)

Normally you’d have to spend $50 to get free shipping from Mountain Equipment Co-op, but this weekend they’ve got free shipping with no minimum.

Having a new trailer, this store very much excites me. They’ve got a great family camping section with Instagram pics and lots of fun tools for family camping.

When you are camping, one thing you really don’t want to bring is ice cream. It would melt too easily, but its funny because that is one thing you crave outside on a hot and sunny day. Problem solved with this YayLabs softshell ice cream ball. Using simple ingredients, your kids can kick the ball around and make ice cream at the same time. Mind. Blown. This is $35 well spent and you don’t even have to go into the store and have it shipped to you free.

If you like roasting marshmallows, I’d take a look at all the fun things you can do with them while camping. I can’t wait for nightfall now!

Of course, being a frugal Mooser, I had a look at the clearance section, because I love to pair free shipping deals with clearance items.

I’ve noticed lately a lot of my husband’s favourite tees have holes in them. He doesn’t have to suffer like that and I can get him these MEC crew tee short sleeve tops for only $12, regularly $18. they look comfortable and soft and the best part: no holes.

The last thing anyone wants to think about is back to school, but trust me, it will be here before we know it. If you have a little one entering kindergarten, this MEC kinder book bag is perfect for them. I actually bought one for my little guy whose Walmart-quality bag ripped in January and had been using a too-small preschool bag for the rest of the year. Watch the video to see how great this bag is. I got the grey and yellow, but they have a number of colours. Regularly $32, it is now $22 with the free shipping as a bonus on top. I’m actually excited to cross one item off my list for the back to school shopping!

In order to make any purchase at MEC, you do need to be a member, but the cost is only $5 and lasts a lifetime.

Men’s Teva Toachi 2 Sandals Were $110 | Now $55 & Free Shipping @ Lacordee

Men’s Teva Toachi 2 Sandals Were $110 | Now $55 & Free Shipping @ Lacordee

For a quality pair of sandals that can keep up with all of your adventures, you need these Men’s Teva Toachi 2 sandals. This particular model of sandals does not have a bigger discount very often. They retail at $110 but you can score a pair now for only $55. Lacordee is also offering free shipping for a limited amount of time. Thanks to Mooser Martin for sharing this hot deal with us!

Lacordee is an outdoor supplier similar to MEC or Live Out There. We have never featured them on Bargainmoose before, but today they have a stellar deal on these Men’s Teva sandals. Normally their killer deals have a limited sizing available, but today we are in luck.

These Teva sandals are the sandals that will travel with you anywhere. The cushioned fully adjustable straps ensure you have a perfect fit, which make them an especially good choice for those who have trouble finding quality sandals that fit. The bottom of the shoe has lots of extra traction. Teva sandals are perfect if you like water adventures such as boating, kayaking and fishing. Included is a thick rubber sole that has Microban added to help reduce bacteria and smelly odors and makes them a good choice for light hiking and camping. That Microban stuff really works on cutting down on odors, I have owned several pair of Teva sandals and they are always less smelly then my other sporty sandals. Teva’s also wash down quickly and look good as new afterwards.

When you buy a pair of Teva sandals, you can expect them to last multiple years. My last pair lasted me well over eight years before a replacement was needed. This pair today is available in a black colour called Raven. You can pick them up in the following sizes:

  • 8.5
  • 9.
  • 9.5
  • 10
  • 10.5
  • 11
  • 11.5
  • 12
  • 13

Looking around the web, this price is about as low as you can get for these sandals. Teva has sold this model for multiple years. Live Out There has discounted these sandals down to $76.99. You could pick up these sandals at for $99. is selling these shoes for $110. Teva Canada is also charging full retail value at $110.

Reviews are looking great everywhere, everyone seems happy with these sandals. Most places have just a few positive reviews, but on Teva Canada’s website there are over 200 reviews and these sandals still maintain a four and a half out of five rating. Here is one reviewer who sums up just how fantastic these shoes are.

This is an all-around great sandal, with many uses very well built takes the trails, beach, lake and rivers and forest, Saturday fighting the crowds wherever you find yourself. I will be buying another pair the toachi 2. I am 6’7″ and my feet feel great at the end of the day while out for a little adventure.

These shoes are a solid buy. Normally shipping at Lacordee will cost you $6, so the free shipping today will save you that cash. There are a few locations not included in the free shipping promo including northern British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Labrador, Newfoundland and Nunavik. For the rest of us I would suggest grabbing a pair of these as a mainstay for the next few summers.

Insulated Collapsible Picnic Basket Was $52 | Now $19 With Coupon Code & Free Shipping @

Posted by on July 6, 2015 at 8:30 AM

Insulated Collapsible Picnic Basket Was $52 | Now $19 With Coupon Code & Free Shipping @

Picnics and spending time outside is a big part of summertime. Get ready for your next adventure with this fun insulated collapsible picnic basket. Valued at $52, this basket is on sale @ Wagjag for $24. Use our exclusive coupon code MOOSE5 to receive an extra $5 off your order. That brings your total to only $19 including free shipping!

Everyone loves a picnic and with this bag, you can be ready on a moment’s notice. Check out this fully collapsible picnic basket over at Wagjag. This bag has an aluminium frame and is lined on the inside. That lining helps keep cold foods cold but also keeps hot foods hotter. While I am not thinking too much about hot food right now, a sleek little bag like this can be just as handy in the wintertime for a potluck as it is in summer for a picnic. The top seals with a zipper keeping either the cold or the warm food protected. Once you eat all of your delicious munchies, the bag folds down making it easy to store and much slimmer than your average bulky cooler bag. This bag is the perfect size for a family day out, and clocks in at the following dimensions: 35cm width x 30cm length x 15cm height.

You also have four different colour options including:

  • Blue
  • Grey
  • Black
  • Red

At Bed Bath and Beyond Canada, I found an insulated picnic tote for $29.99. At I found several options, but the cheapest one that is fully insulated clocks in at $43.72. is selling a similar insulated bag for $55. Most of the other places I found these bags are now out of stock. The season on these bags is coming to a close even though they still have plenty of uses in wintertime.

One of my teacher friends has a bag very similar to this that she received from a thoughtful parent. It so far has been the perfect size to hold lunch and snacks for a family enjoying a day at the beach or at an amusement park. This basket slides over your arm, making it much easier to tote along than your typical cooler. The frame always kept her food from ending up squished, unlike my watermelon that became juice in my bag. If you like to make gift baskets, this is an excellent way to throw together a nice little present. This would be lovely full of food for a new mom, or as a present for the hockey family who is always on the go.

Go ahead and pick out your favourite colour. If you are ordering more than one basket, I recommend placing separate orders so you can use the coupon code more than once since shipping is free.

Today Only! Sportcraft Backpack Gazebo Was $110 | Now $55 & Free Shipping @ Best Buy Canada

Posted by on May 20, 2015 at 12:18 PM

Today Only! Sportcraft Backpack Gazebo Was $110 | Now $55 & Free Shipping @ Best Buy Canada

Today only at Best Buy Canada you can pick up the Sportcraft Backpack Gazebo. This cool shade on a hot summer day was $109.99 but is now only $54.99. This item also qualifies for completely free shipping.

Here is a sweet little deal for all of your upcoming summer fun. Sometimes in the summer, you find yourself regularly in the blazing sun with no shade. I personally hover over one of those water bottles with the fan attached just to grab a little cool air. Grab this portable gazebo and you and two friends will be sitting pretty in the shade.

This is a personal size gazebo and clocks in at two meters by two meters, or roughly six and a half feet by six and a half feet. Included on the case are backpack straps so you can easily haul this gazebo wherever you are going. That leaves your hands free to carry your camping chair or pull your cooler along.  This gazebo is lightweight, weighing only 18 lbs and is both UV coated and waterproof. This product is freestanding, but also comes with all the ties to stake down this gazebo. You and up to two friends can sit comfortably under this canopy with your cooler.

Here is a list of reasons why you need this gazebo:

  • Shade for your day at the beach
  • The soccer fields never have shade
  • If your kid plays baseball, there is never shade there either
  • Perfect for the jazz festival or another festival where you hang out all day
  • Bring it with you camping
  • Perfect for an outdoor fundraiser
  • Add some comfort to your garage sale
  • Have some shade in your backyard while you wait for those trees you planted to grow

The only place in Canada that carries this exact model of this gazebo is, where you will pay $69.99. If you are looking for an easier-to-carry, lightweight pop-up shelter there is not a whole lot on the market. Over at, I found a pop-up shelter that is a little bit bigger at 10 feet by 10 feet, and is equipped with a carrying case with handles. This canopy is made by the company Trademark Innovations, and will cost $99.99. I was surprised the camping supply outfitters do not seem to carry these.  Over at Home Depot Canada, I found a larger white slant leg canopy with a size of 8 feet by 8 feet and costs $119.99. Think again if you think will have a cheaper version. The cheapest canopy I could find there was 10 feet by 10 feet, and it cost $268! Your best bet is the deal at Best Buy Canada.

Your skin will thank you for buying this deal, and so will two of your friends if you decide to share. This deal is only for today. Some of these daily deals at Best Buy are selling out fast lately. If you want one, grab it now!

Amazon Canada: Lodge Double Play Reversible Griddle Was $75 | Now $37 & Free Shipping *BUMP*

Posted by on April 20, 2015 at 7:34 AM

Amazon Canada: Lodge Double Play Reversible Griddle Was $75 | Now $37 & Free Shipping *BUMP*

*BUMP! Amazon has further reduced this item from $50 down to $36.99. Take advantage while you can, as it sold out the first time.*

I plan on doing a lot of camping this summer and I know there are many of you who will be too. I know this because trying to get an electrical site at a provincial park in Ontario is a nightmare even months before the dates I want to go! I’m sure the other provinces have the same issue. Since we’ll be doing a lot of camping, we are looking for camping gear and my husband is looking for a griddle and I think I’ve found him one. This Lodge double play reversible grill griddle is perfect for us. It was regularly $75 and now only $49.99 including free shipping at Amazon.

You don’t just have to use this while camping, as you can use it right on your ceramic stove. I hope to use this over the fire and on our portable BBQ. One side is flat, which is great for cooking things like sandwiches, pancakes, eggs and fish. The other side is ribbed for burgers, chicken and other items you want to get those great grill marks on.

I like that this is one item that I need, as space in my vehicle is limited and having to take a griddle and a grill would be a pain! I also like that it is cast iron, as I love cooking pretty much everything on cast iron. I really can’t wait to have my first steak over the fire.

This item has great reviews, giving it a total of four stars out of five. People like the high quality of Lodge products. Some people use it only for camping, others for everyday. I love a versatile product in my kitchen!

It sells for $75 at Sears, $60 at ECS Coffee and $63 at Walmart. This time around, Amazon has the best price and it could change at any time, so don’t wait.

70% Off Teva Sandals & Footwear @ Live Out There

Posted by on January 23, 2015 at 10:00 AM

70% Off Teva Sandals & Footwear @ Live Out There

Live Out There is having a winter blowout sale right now, through to the end of January. Most of their items are marked 40% to 50% off but I found some great sales on Teva Sandals and Footwear on final sale for 70% off. Live Out There provides free shipping for all orders in Canada, no minimum.

Oh hiking sandals, you and I have such a quiet love affair. Hiking sandals are my footwear of choice in the spring and summer time for activities such as hiking, camping or canoeing. I have owned several pairs of both Teva sandals and flip flops over the years and have long been impressed with the quality, foot support and durability of their shoes.  I convinced my husband several years ago to buy a pair and now he loves his too. Shoe love does not come easy from a man who refuses to own more than 6 pairs of shoes! Teva sandals do give you a decent foot support for many outside pursuits though they are not a substitute for hiking boots when out on rugged terrain.

Check out the Women’s Kayenta Sandal options. These sandals were $89.99 and now are only $27. This rugged sandal comes in two colour styles. Dream Weave is a black with some red accents and comes in size 8.5, 9.5 and 10. There is also a pair in a slate blue-grey colour with white accents that is only available in size 7. I may consider replacing my older 3-year-old pair with the Dream Weave style for myself. These sandals are retailing for $72 to $100 at depending on the colour. I see also that they used to be listed at a variety of sports outfitters but are no longer in stock. I noticed that this is a spring 2014 model, which is probably why I am not finding these available elsewhere. It seems that Live Out There is making room for the new spring line.

If you like an even sportier look check out the Women’s Toachi which was $109 and is now $33. This sandal is available in both a pink and grey or in a blue and grey style. The pink comes in multiple sizes but the blue only comes in size 8.5 and 11. has these sandals on sale for $88 and seems to be the only other retailer carrying these in a women’s model. I like that these include an extra shock pad in the heel that will give your feet a little extra support and comfort.

There are other great Teva sandals and shoes on sale for both men and women at 70% off. The sizing availability is a little spotty. Use the search features on the left to narrow down your choices to your size. If you are looking for more great deals from Live Out There, check out this post from Eva for this great pair of Lole snow pants or click around to check out more of their winter sale deals.

Ventura 9 Piece Family Camp Combo Only $75 @ Walmart Clearance! Quick!

Posted by on January 2, 2015 at 1:45 PM

Ventura 9 Piece Family Camp Combo Only $75 @ Walmart Clearance! Quick!

BUMP – now down to only $75 & free shipping from Walmart! And as it is in the “clearance” section, it may not last long as this price.

If you are looking to spend sometime under the stars this coming summer, take a peek at this Ventura 9 Piece Family Camp Combo at Walmart, a great deal at $97.94 only $75!

This camping set comes with everything you need to enjoy a good night sleep in the great outdoors this summer. In addition to the 6 person tent, it also comes with 1 sun shade, 2 adult sleeping bags, 2 travel sized pillows & 2 folding chairs.  The sleeping bags are rated for -45 degrees. Like all tents, it also comes with a rain fly (partial) that allows for better ventilation and movement of air inside tent.

The 6 person tent is ample room for a family of 4-5 with room for storage and is rain resistant, always a plus just in case. The manufacturer has recommended 2 people to assemble or disassemble.

Although I haven’t personally used this tent, at this price if you were to get two seasons out of it, then it was money well spent.

One item that is included that I think you could put to good use outside the campgrounds is the sun shade. If you coach soccer or if your child plays soccer, you know how hot it can get on the sidelines. I’ve noticed more and more of these popping up at the local soccer pitches and I think its a great idea. It keeps the sun off the players and gives them a common area to congregate.

Another spot I think the sun shade could come in handy is the beach. Its always nice to be able to create a little bit of shade when your planning on spending the day by the surf.

The majority of the reviews on this product are very positive, like this one:

Bought this as a Father’s Day gift for my husband. He took our son camping and loved it. Tent was bigger than expected!

As always, Walmart offers free shipping with no minimum required.

Walmart Canada: Jack Wolfskin Yosemite II Tent On Clearance – Now $195 (Was $300)

Posted by on June 16, 2014 at 9:08 PM

Walmart Canada: Jack Wolfskin Yosemite II Tent On Clearance – Now $195 (Was $300)

Here is your chance to scoop up a great deal on a 2-person Jack Wolfskin tent at Walmart Canada! While supplies last, this Jack Wolfskin Yosemite II Tent was originally priced at $300 and is now only $195.

This two-door, entry level tent is a great beginners tent. My husband and I started camping many years ago with a tent very similar to this. Of course as our family grew, so did our shelter, however our 2-person tent saw us through many trips to Algonquin, the east coast and various provincial and KOA style campgrounds.

Two features these tents offer that I feel you want to consider when shopping for a smaller 2-3 person shelter are storage pockets on the inside and a semi-shelter at the front.  Although these are not necessarily must-haves, these features make a huge difference when you are talking about drastically reducing the amount of living space you will be acclimatizing yourself to, even for a couple of nights. Small tents such as these don’t offer a whole lot of space for gear etc., on the inside, and therefore you won’t have ready access to your pack or storage bins especially late at night. So depending on where you’ve decided to camp,  having a few inside pouches to store flashlights and other small necessities that you will want to easily access from inside make a difference.

Also, I’ve always found that having a small privacy screen just outside your tent allows you to store a few more items close to “home” but not necessarily inside the tent. Again, you will need to take into consideration where you are camping and base what you leave in your tent or within arms reach on what wildlife resides nearby, however my husband and I would leave our footwear in this area and we also found this little fly provided just the right amount of privacy when getting changed that we could open up the tent door in the morning or at bedtime without feeling exposed.

Although I was unable to find very many price comparisons, you can see that Walmart Canada’s price is a steal compared to the same model found at La Cordée where the regular price is $349.99.

Walmart Canada is also offering two other Jack Wolfskin tents on clearance. If you are looking for a roomier tent they are offering the same style but in a 3-person format for only

As always with Walmart Canada, shipping is also absolutely free!

Amazon Canada: Highland Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Only $84 (Was $157)

Posted by on April 21, 2014 at 11:00 AM

Amazon Canada: Highland Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Only $84 (Was $157)

I found this deal for a Highland Hitch mounted cargo carrier interesting because this is something my husband wants for the back of our van. It was $157.32, now $84.

This item is a super handy item for people who need extra cargo space on their vehicle. My mom has one on the back of her truck, and uses it to store items for when they go camping or on holiday. There are also boxes you can get that are made to go on this cargo carrier, to make it easier to cart items. Our van is usually over-full when we go on vacation and we can’t store too much at the back because we need all the seats up with three kids and a dog in tow. Once we put in two coolers and two suitcases we are pretty much full. This would give us a little extra room for more supplies.

You’ll need a hitch on your vehicle to install this and it has a 500-pound capacity. It bolts together in minutes so anyone can do it. The platform is 60 inches x 20 inches x 2.5 inches with an expanded metal deck. It also includes convenient tie-down points for keeping all your gear in place. The heavy duty steel construction also means it will last for a long time.

I tried to price compare but couldn’t find this item at any other Canadian retailer. I found a few in the States, which were higher than the price here, so I’d say this is a good deal.

Shipping will be free as well.

July 14 Save 20% On Coghlan’s Camping Products

Get yourself ready for camping with all the little essentials you’ll need for 20% off at

Decided to take on the wild world of camping? Good for you! I actually love camping, except for the bugs, the bad weather and the lack of a proper washroom. I do love the living in nature part. When I camp, I need to be prepared with a ton of items, not just pack a backpack and hope for the best. No back country for me!

I like items like this camp cooker, that toasts sandwiches and other items over the fire. Not much more satisfying than watching your food char (or burn, whatever floats your boat) over an open fire. Was $19.99, now $15.99.

An electric air pump is also a must-have considering I can’t sleep on the hard ground. Seriously, now. Was $15.99, now $12.79.

The picnic combo pack gives you a tablecloth and clamps to keep your tablecloth down, because it would suck to watch your tablecloth wave in the wind from the top of the tree down the way. Was $9.99, now $7.99.

Shipping is free when you spend $25.
