Telus Canada: Save Up To $100 On HTC One With Trade-In! (In Store)

Posted by on April 27, 2013 at 9:00 PM

Telus Canada: Save Up To $100 On HTC One With Trade In! (In Store)

The HTC One is one of the hottest phones out there, and Telus wants you to have it. Trade in your old phone and get a huge discount!

The deal is simple. You trade in any old cell phone and you get $100 credit towards the HTC One. On a three year contract, the HTC One is only $149, so a $100 savings means you only pay $49 for one of the BEST smartphones out there! I can’t see anywhere that it says there is a limit to what kind of phone it is, so I can imagine you could bring in your Nokia flip phone from nine years ago and still get this deal. You should also be aware that this is for new or renewing customers only, and is only valid for certain plans.

This phone is one of the best phones out there right now. Besides the fact that it looks really, really cool and has that super thin bezel, it is a power house. Look at these specs:

    • Android 4.2
    • 4MP UltraPixel Camera
    • 1080p Video
    • 4.7″ full HD screen
    • 1.7 GHz Quad-Core processor

I think the best thing about this phone is the full HD screen. I haven’t used this phone yet, but I’ve heard that the video looks absolutely amazing on it.

Home automation has always been the realm of the geeky. The home security side of home automation has always been for the rich or paranoid. I’m not gonna lie and say home automation and security isn’t geeky or expensive anymore, but I will say that it has been expanded to allow anyone in. It used to be that home automation was big, expensive modules hanging out of your sockets, hard to program timers and some fairly advanced equipment. It was just a pain in the butt for most normal people. Nowadays it’s stuff like USB enabled wall outlets and the Wallee iPad wall mount case.

And it’s the Wallee that I want to talk about next. The fine folks at AAR Tech mentioned it specifically but that is not why I’m writing about it. Normally, to be quite honest, if a site recommends a product to mention in my post, I don’t. That’s not important though. What is important is that this product, which I was hoping was connected in some way to the movie Wall-E, is pretty cool.

No, it’s not related to the movie but it is cool nonetheless. Essentially it’s a series of accessories that attach to an iPad case. There are a few things I like about this setup over others. The first is that one case works with a bunch of different mounting mechanisms. You can use the case to mount it to a wall, mount it to the back of a headrest, give your iPad a kickstand or one of the other options available. Another big plus is the continued functionality after the iPad is off the mount. Some of these mounting systems have a big clunky case or have to be glued to your device. The Wallee case is functional even if it isn’t mounted.

    • Discount: 25% off any PC game
    • Expires: Unknown

Wild Tangent has been around for a while and, for me, they weren’t a player until they got on Android. That was pretty much because if I was going to be on a computer playing a video game it was going to be a full PC game or, if I needed a quick fix, I’d hop on some random free flash game site.

Now, with the prevalence of Android devices and the rise of casual gaming in general, this is a very interesting service. For me it’ll very likely be an Android thing because, like I said earlier, if I’m on the computer to game, I’m playing a full on PC game, not a casual game. But on my Android device I do a lot of casual gaming. They do have stuff that, really, isn’t that casual. They have all genres imaginable from action to RPG to sports and all points in between.

Make sure you check out our Wild Tangent Coupon section for more deals! Go though and take a look at the games they have available. Let me know what game you’re saving 25% on in the comments below!

Staples Canada: Nexus 7 Tablet (Refurb) For Only $175 & FREE Shipping!

Posted by on March 27, 2013 at 1:04 PM

Staples Canada: Nexus 7 Tablet (Refurb) For Only $175 & FREE Shipping!

Staples Canada is bringing you one of the best Android devices out there for a pretty much unheard of price. Pick it up, it will not last long! It’s the Nexus 7 (refurb) for only $175 with free shipping…

There are not a lot of things that Google Nexus Android and Apple iOS devices have in common. One thing that they do have in common is that you do not see sales very often. For iOS devices it’s because Apple can pretty much charge whatever they want for their devices and make money off of them. For Google Nexus Android devices it’s because Google isn’t making any money off them. They make their money when you use the Internet and giving you a $200 tablet is a great way to get you on the Internet. Apple doesn’t discount because they don’t have to, Google doesn’t discount because they can’t sell the device for less than it costs to make, market, ship and support.

That’s why this is such a great deal! The 16GB Nexus 7 is usually $209 plus shipping and, from what I can gather on Staples’ website they usually sell the refurbished ones for $199.96. Right now though, Staples has increased its HUGE $9.04 discount to $34.04 off the new price. On top of that you get free shipping. So all-in-all where shipping, for me, is about $17 and taxes would be lower on this one, you’re saving somewhere around $50 on the device. On top of that you’re getting it at a store that likely has a location near you so if you have any problems, bring it to the store. No shipping it back to Google.

Just on an ending note, the Nexus 7 is one of the best Android tablets out there and the 7″ f0rm factor is hugely popular right now. This tablet gets all the Android updates as soon as they are available and, for the price, doesn’t have much real competition.

Amazon Canada: $50 Off Asus Transformer TF300T – Standalone or With Dock

Posted by on March 12, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Amazon Canada: $50 Off Asus Transformer TF300T Standalone or With Dock

A great sale from Amazon Canada and Asus this week. You get a great tablet at a great price! $50 savings on the tablet by itself of the tablet and keyboard/battery dock.

I owned the original Asus Transformer, the TF101, and the dock and it was quite literally one of the best products I’d ever used. I used it instead of a laptop for well over a year. Maybe over two years. I only sold it because I got a laptop but now I dearly miss my tablet.

If you’re at all interested in a tablet, I highly suggest this one. The tablet is great but the keyboard dock really makes it awesome. The dock has a keyboard and mouse that make it infinitely more useful for typing. I find the mouse pad less useful on a touch screen device but it’s there if you want it. I found on a few games it was easier to mouse than touch. Actually, that’s a good point. The arrow keys on the keyboard map properly to the controls on some games so those annoying on-screen controls, in some cases, go away.

The battery is the other aspect of the dock. It gives insane battery life. I’m talking like 16 hours on one charge. Now of course if you’re streaming HD video that 16 hour life is going to be far less but I could routinely go two days, with a fair amount of Netflix watching, on one charge. This really is one of the best mobile computing devices you can get today and the price is awesome.

WagJag: Save 91% on Classes to Learn How to Build Apps for Android, iOS or Both!

Posted by on March 4, 2013 at 11:30 PM

WagJag: Save 91% on Classes to Learn How to Build Apps for Android, iOS or Both!

WagJag is bringing you an insane deal. These courses are not cheap but with WagJag you can learn how to make apps for Android, iOS or both for less than the cost of a date. And if you’re learning how to make apps, you aren’t going on dates anyway so it’s a match made in heaven.

This course is offered by eCareers who, admittedly, I know very little about. I looked around their website and they seem legit. The courses are usually wildly expensive. You’re getting an amazing deal.
    • $29 for an app-building course for iPhone (a $312 value)
    • $29 for an app-building course for Android (a $312 value)
    • $49 for an app-building course for Android AND iPhone (a $469 value)

If you have a Mac to code from, the iOS and Android course is the obvious winner here. Even if you’re only interested in one of the other, you’re really crippling yourself right off the bat by neglecting a massive app ecosystem.

It seems like, from the description, the course is meant for all levels, which is nice. I’ve done other programming courses that are terrible because they are meant for someone who doesn’t know anything. If they can manage to present the course in a way such that everyone can use it.

Google Play Store: Dr. Seuss Book Apps on Sale – Up to 75% Off

Posted by on March 2, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Google Play Store: Dr. Seuss Book Apps on Sale Up to 75% Off

It’s Dr. Seuss’ birthday today and Google and Oceanhouse media are celebrating accordingly with a huge sale on Dr. Seuss book apps!

There are 35 books on sale including all your favorites like:

And of course there are other books on sale here that maybe you haven’t heard of. It’s a good opportunity to explore a bit and try some books you might not have otherwise gotten.

I feel kind of stupid writing about Dr. Seuss. It’s like writing an article talking about how awesome it is to breath. But for those of you who may not know, Dr. Seuss is the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, an author best known for his kids books, including the ones I mentioned above as well as others like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Dr. Seuss’ Sleep Book and The Sneetches. He’s awesome, check out his stuff. Go. Now. Get out of my house.

Amazon Canada: Save up to 45% on Le Pan I & II Android Tablets!

Posted by on February 7, 2013 at 1:30 PM

Amazon Canada: Save up to 45% on Le Pan I & II Android Tablets!

If you don’t have a tablet, this is the time to get one. Amazon Canada is offering some really, really good deals on Le Pan Android tablets for an unspecified length of time. Get one now!!

These are the two tablets available. Shipping is free within Canada, of course.

I don’t think that, in all the time I’ve been interested in technology, I’ve ever seen the price barrier to entry on a product drop this quickly. I mean, I remember when laptops were an absolute luxury item. You couldn’t get one for under $2000. It took years for them to drop this much. Smartphones are just getting to the point where you can pick one up with the money you find in your couch cushions. Tablets have gone from moderately priced to dirt cheap in an incredibly short amount of time. You are going to sacrifice some quality (Le Pan is no Samsung) but not that much, considering the prices.

The Le Pan I is low enough in price that you can pick one up for everyone in the family for the price of a single higher end device. You could even get it as an eReader and put the eBook Reader Apps on from all the popular stores like Kindle, Kobo and Sony. You pay almost the same price as a traditional eReader but you get an Android tablet too.

I should mention that the extra $60 for the Le Pan II is very much worth it. I know some people who have an iPad and iPhone and would like to try Android but don’t want to drop $400 for a good tablet. The Le Pan II is a great opportunity to experience a newer flavour of Android without having to break the bank or settle for an older version of Android like the Le Pan I has.

How to Use the Freemium Model

Posted by on February 3, 2013 at 8:00 PM

How to Use the Freemium Model

What is the freemium model? Well, freemium is a monetization plan in which a product is offered for free but provides opportunities to make purchases related to the product. The most common form of this is with games (particularly mobile apps) that have in-game purchases. So what about the freemium model warrants an entire article? I’m going to give you some tips on how not to get burned by the freemium model. You can sink serious money into these products and it’s important to understand how it works before you get sucked in. Here are a few tips to keep in mind while using a freemium product.

Do you NEED to make a purchase to use the product properly?

Most of my experience with this model is in games so I’m going to use games for my examples. There is a game called My Country for Android that I had the unfortunate job of reviewing in another life. It is actually a really fun game and is free. The developers make their money off of in-game micro-transactions. The problem is that, at a certain point, you cannot advance the game without making purchases. Technically you can, but it would take weeks of playing just to get one item you need. If the product you are using requires, or effectively requires, you to make a purchase in order to advance or have fun, ditch it.

    Is it starting a Cycle?

This is probably the most important thing to keep in mind  I’ve been playing a game called Plague Inc. (awesome game) as of late. It is set up in a way such that any purchase you make, unlocks the full game. Essentially what they have done is given you a game for free and said “IF you like it, pay us a dollar to get more or it.” A game like My Country wouldn’t be too bad if they asked for $1 to unlock some mechanism that would allow you to get the needed items easily. Instead you buy an item then another and another and another. There is effectively no end to the game.

Be careful who you buy from

There are companies out there that are notorious for making amazing games that effectively require you to make purchases. Glu Mobile is great at this. I should pause here and mention that this is not a bad thing. I have a huge amount of respect for Glu and the people there. From a money saving perspective, they are a nightmare. They make high quality, very addictive games and make money from in-game purchases. Sure, you never HAVE to make a purchase to advance but you either need to play the game flawlessly or endlessly to progress. Glu, whose tag line is “The Leader in 3D Freemium Mobile Gaming”, is not the only company who does this. If you start playing a game from a company who does this, make a note. This way you can avoid these games in the future.

I know I only used examples of mobile games but the freemium model is everywhere as of late. There is actually a book called “FREE: The Future of a Radical Price” that is available on Amazon.ca and talks about the freemium model. As it turns out, the book FREE is available for FREE at Audible.com. Even more interesting is that you can only get your FREE copy of FREE if you sign up for a FREE 30-day trial @ Audible.com.

What freemium stuff have you run in to? Are you ok with freemium or does it turn you off of a product? Let me know below.

Google Play Store: How The Grinch Stole Christmas Interactive Book for Only 99 cents + More Dr. Seuss Deals (Up to 80% Off)

Posted by on December 22, 2012 at 2:00 AM

Google Play Store: How The Grinch Stole Christmas Interactive Book for Only 99 cents + More Dr. Seuss Deals (Up to 80% Off)

I’m all for vegetation homicide but only as a pastime. Putting it to good use, like making books out of it, is caveman thinking. That’s why Bargainmoose and Google Play are bringing you Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas for only 99 cents!

(I’m kidding, by the way. If your pastime is cutting down trees for no good reason, you’re probably an idiot.)

I don’t know the before price but I think it was $4.99. Regardless, 99 cents is an amazing deal for this app. The app is made by Oceanhouse Media who has done this with dozens of books, many of which I own for my son. They are the masters at digitizing books for a touch screen device and adding all the modern touches to help your kid learn and enjoy the book.

They take these books and break them down into three reading modes:.

    • “Read to Me” — listen to the narrated story with words highlighted as they are read
    • “Read it Myself” — read the book in its traditional form
    • “Auto Play” — plays like a movie, automatically reading and turning pages. Great for younger children!
As I said, I have a bunch of these for my son (although I personally find It’s Tyrannosaurus Rex! to be particularly thrilling) and they really are great books. I’m not one to parent other peoples children but for me, these are family activities.
You could definitely plop your kid on the couch with a tablet and let it read to him but I find it better to sit with him and read along. Seems less like sticking him in front of another warmly glowing babysitter.
If the Grinch isn’t your thing, all the Oceanhouse Dr. Seuss books are 40% to 80% off this week so have at it!

CrushEpilepsy.com: Get a Great Game for Your Mobile Device AND Donate to Fight Epilepsy for FREE!

Posted by on November 30, 2012 at 2:00 AM

CrushEpilepsy.com: Get a Great Game for Your Mobile Device AND Donate to Fight Epilepsy for FREE!

The best kind of charitable donation is the one that you don’t have to pay to donate to… and the one that gives you a free game… Hmm. That sounded far more snappy in my head…

This freebie is super awesome. You visit this site on your mobile device (Android or iOS only) and you are forwarded to the Apple App Store or the Google Play store. Once you’re there you will get a FREE game from the fine human beings at King.com AND $1 will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation of America. This all happens, as I mentioned above, for FREE. You don’t pay for the game, you don’t pay for the donation.

A couple of things you need to know. For the donation to go through, you need to visit crushepilepsy.com on your mobile device and get the app that way. The site will automatically forward you to the Apple store or the Google store. If you just get the game through the App Store or the Play Store, you will not be making a donation. Make sure you do it on your iOS or Android device via the website.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have multiple Android or iOS devices (I have five Android devices, soon to be six) you can get the game and donate a dollar by visiting the site on each device. Don’t just send the app to your other devices from one device or log in and get it from iTunes, make sure you visit the site on each device! While you’re at it, grab the devices of other people around you and download the game for them. If they are really mad about it, they can uninstall it and you can bask in the knowledge that you forced them to donate money without them even knowing about it!

Notice how I’ve conveniently not mentioned the name of the game. That’s because I want you to go to the website and make a FREE donation to figure out what the game is! Intriguing, isn’t it!?

Humble Bundle: Pay What You Want for a Pack of Awesome Android (and PC/Mac/Linux) Games and Support Charity While You do it!

Posted by on November 21, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Humble Bundle: Pay What You Want for a Pack of Awesome Android (and PC/Mac/Linux) Games and Support Charity While You do it!

I did a humble bundle write up a while ago but that was for books and reading is for suckers. The cool kids are all playing video games. You want to be cool, don’t you?

Ok, so I didn’t put the price or number of games in the title because it takes some explaining. The humble bundle is five games and you pay whatever you want for them. $1, $50 or over $9000. For that you will get the following games for Android, Linux, PC and Mac.

But if you pay over the average price payed (which at this point is less than $7, you get six additional games for Android, Linux, PC or Mac. The games are as follows.

If that wasn’t enough you get the soundtracks to these games if there happens to be a tune you dig. You might be saying “a game song, really?” but these aren’t your little 99 cent farming games. These are real games. They are big and have great soundtracks and graphics.

So what in the world could ever be better than this deal? Well, the whole thing is to raise money for charity. The charities this time around are the EFF and Child’s Play. Which brings me to another awesome aspect of this deal. You can choose where to money goes. If you want you can put all the money to charity or all of it to the devs or all of it to the Humble Tip, which goes to the people who put on the Humble Bundle. Beyond that you can break it into which developers you want to give to or which charities. I, personally, am a big supporter of the Child’s Play charity so the charity portion of my donation will all go to Child’s Play.

    Buytopia: $99 7″ Android Tablet + 1 Year Warranty! (Save $200)

    Buytopia: $99 7 Android Tablet + 1 Year Warranty! (Save $200)

Buytopia Canada has an Android tablet for sale that won’t break the bank for the holidays!

First off, this 7″ tablet is normally $293 but you only pay $99 which means you save $194!

This is another lower-end Android tablet that would be perfectly suited for a kid, elderly person or someone who just isn’t that into the tablet world. If you are a power user, this probably isn’t going to be your main tablet. It could easily be a guest tablet though.

I’ve mentioned the concept of guest laptops before but I think a guest tablet might be a better choice. The concept of a guest device is simple: you have a device to hand to your guests. I know when I watch TV or a movie, I like to have my tablet with me to look up things about actors or characters or the show in general. If I was watching with a friend, I could give them the guest tablet and they could do the same. Even if you’re having an overnight house guest it would be a nice touch to put a tablet on the bedside table of the spare room so they could check their email or Facebook before they go to sleep.

There are tons of things that you could do with an inexpensive tablet like this. If you have any ideas on what to do with a device like this, let us know in the comments below!
