    The BargainMoose Forum

Posted by Avigayil Morris on November 1, 2011 at 3:00 PM

    The BargainMoose Forum

Hey Moosers! I thought I would drop you all a line about our lovely Bargainmoose forum.

First off: The Bargainmoose forum can be found under ‘hot deals‘ under our big Bargainmoose banner up at the top of the blog, or through that pretty little right top side Hot Deals window.

I wanted to let you know that  not only do we blog about fantastic deals, but we also put awesome deals on the forum. Though we do have some overlap there are deals on the forum you won’t see on the blog! This isn’t because they are ‘less fantastic deals’ but because we have fantastic writers on both the forum and the blog: so you will find great deals both places.

I, personally love to dump a bunch of deals I find with near expiry dates on the forum, especially if it is a high deal day (meaning I am finding loads!). There are some great freebies on the forum you won’t see on the blog: a Hugo Boss Orange Sample and Find Your Bliss shower gel/body butter freebie. Our wonderful forum gals post freebies all the time over there!

Some deals I just love from the blog that have been posted lately are:

There are tons more. The great thing with the forum too is you can post your own deals and share with your fellow Moosers!

So come visit us on the forum more, eh!

    Blockbuster Closing Sale Starts Friday

Posted by Avigayil Morris on September 8, 2011 at 4:30 PM

    Blockbuster Closing Sale Starts Friday

As some of you know, and others will now know: Blockbuster is going under. This Friday, 9th, September 2011, they are starting their big clearance sales to clear out the merchandise.

Here is an exempt I got from the Truro Daily News:

As part of the closure process, Blockbuster Canada Co. will have a final clearance sale for its entire inventory at a significant discount, after which the company’s remaining stores will close. The clearance sales are scheduled to begin on Friday. In connection with the store closures, effective also on Friday, Blockbuster gift cards and loyalty/rewards programs will no longer be redeemed by customers.

What this means for Moosers: Deals on games, movies, TV series and more. Let us know if you hit Blockbuster up and what you get!

Thanks to Mooser rockt who posted this on the community forums, and thanks to Truro Daily News for the quote.

I bought a bottle of this for my man last week. He doesn’t wear aftershave often, but I am actually trying to encourage him to wear it more regularly. I really like the scent of the Hugo Boss Just Different. And the advertising campaign with the gorgeous Jared Leto didn’t sway me at all!! Here he is in action:

Oh, and there’s also a Hugo contest happening online at The Bay. They’re giving away an all-inclusive, one night, VIP party experience in a mystery U.S. destination. Might be a nice one to enter too!

A Guide to Buying University Textbooks

Posted by Avigayil Morris on August 3, 2011 at 10:00 AM

A Guide to Buying University Textbooks

It is 1 month away from going back to university / college, and now is the time to be buying your textbooks: believe it or not. Usually universities have just come out with the fall list of books for classes and you as soon as possible you should consult that document and compile a list of what you need.

The key is to by USED. Used textbooks will save you a ton of money, and not just buying used from your campus bookstore.

Your best friends for used textbooks are:

Between those three websites you can find a huge supply of textbooks. Shipping per textbook when buying used is around $6.49 per book. Factor that in to your buying price to make sure you really are getting a deal.

The first commandment of buying used textbooks is buy early, generally at the beginning of August.
The second commandment is to price compare.

An example from my own schooling: to buy my History of Modern Psychology book at the campus bookstore used would cost me $116.25, new I would be looking at $154.79. A quick look at Chapters for the book and I can get it used for $67.56 (+ $6.49 shipping). Amazon marketplace has it actually new for $56.47 (+ $6.49 shipping). Do I buy from them? No. I check Kijiji. There a girl who took this course last semester is selling her used textbook for $40. So I arrange a pick-up with her.

    Things you need to know:

    • Most used textbooks come from the US, that is why you need the lead time for the 2 -3 weeks for shipping.
    • With many of the used textbooks coming in from the US, once in a while you might get hit with duty. I have done this for years and I think $15 was the worst for a $80 textbook, that would have cost me $120 here. I think in 3 years I have been hit with duty 3 times.
    • When your university does book buybacks they will buy back ones you have not purchased from them. It is a great way to break even, and even make a profit on some textbooks.
    • Your book is used: don’t worry about marks, dirt, worn cover, etc. Just make sure the description says legible and that there are no pages missing. It is not like you are going to have it for very long.

    Addition useful information:

Get the ISBN number of the book you need and use that to make sure you are getting the right edition. There is nothing like being behind an edition or not getting the ‘canadian edition’: not fun.

When the 3 big boys for used textbooks fail, there are additional sites I have had amazing success buying textbooks from: Bookbyte and Alibris are the other top two. For them you can usually find coupon codes for additional % or $ off. Make sure you are aware of the shipping costs and factor them in, I know for Bookbyte it is around $11 a book.

    My success story:

I have bought used textbooks for 3 years now. I generally spend about 30 – 50% less than buying them new at the campus bookstore. That equals several hundred dollars per semester. To put that in perspective my textbooks per semester are generally around $700 – $800 worth: and I generally pay $400 – $500. Then I resell them to the school and generally make around 70 – 90% of what I paid back – because I bought them for so cheap. Some books I make a profit on: that is fun. Or I sell them on Kijiji or Amazon.

Hope this helps all our university students out there!

New Bargainmoose Deals Forums! Come and play…

Posted by Anna Waters on July 21, 2011 at 3:09 PM

Last weekend, I mentioned a surprise would be happening on Bargainmoose this week. So, today I am telling you all what it is – a new Bargainmoose deal community!

The deal community is a place when you can share all your hot shopping finds with your fellow Bargainmoosers. It would be awesome if you could register using the link at the top right there and create a profile for yourself on Bargainmoose, and start sharing your deals! Here’s a quick guide to using the new forums too.

While my authors and I share great deals on the blog every day and will be continuing to do so, the Bargainmoose deals community is a place where you can write about your own special finds. If you post a really hot deal on there, one of our authors might write it up and you will be featured on the front page of Bargainmoose too.

The new deal community is brand new, and as such, you might see a few glitches or issues. If you do come across something that doesn’t seem quite right, I would really appreciate it if you could drop me a line or tell us in the comments below, and we’ll look into fixing it up. It’s really helpful if you tell us what browser and version you might be using too.

I’ve already been sharing some deals on the new community forums, you’ll see some deals, coupons and freebies in there to start with. Let’s start sharing those hot deals! Who is going to be the first mooser to post a deal?

    Upcoming Surprise…

Posted by Anna Waters on July 17, 2011 at 3:00 PM

    Upcoming Surprise...

    Hey Moosers!

Guess what? I’ve got a surprise up my sleeve which I will be announcing some time next week.

The surprise MAY or may NOT be one of the following:

Telepathic deal sharing – you think about the deal you want, and I communicate the details to you by the process of telepathy.

Edible coupons – printable coupons that you eat which transmogrify into a food substance in your belly. World hunger? Solved.

Freebie mountains – a million freebies will be shipped to your home every day. In fact, there are so many freebies that you will need to buy a mansion to store them.

Or maybe something totally different… check in next week to see!

Whoop! 10k Bargainmoosers! (And want to win a Kindle?)

Posted by Anna Waters on June 7, 2011 at 9:00 PM

Whoop! 10k Bargainmoosers! (And want to win a Kindle?)

*** Winner is Bargainmooser Megan ***

Since Bargainmoose started out in August 2008, I’ve been closely watching my daily RSS readers figure, which you can see towards the top right of the page. Back in June 2009, we reached 1000 moosers, and today, we’ve reached 10,000! Whoop!

I’ll re-iterate a sentence or two from that previous post about what the RSS figure means – it is made up of people who daily read Bargainmoose on the web reader of their choice, or are subscribed to the Bargainmoose daily email updates. For this reason, the figure fluctuates up and down sometimes, with Monday usually being the peak day when people go back to work after the weekend.

So in order to celebrate, I am putting my hand into my moose-shaped wallet, and I’m going to buy one of you a new Amazon Kindle ebook reader. I myself have the Sony ebook reader, but the Kindle seems to be the most popular e-reading device lately!

    How to win the Kindle:

    • Leave a comment below to congratulate all the Moosers for being so awesome
    • If you are not already subscribed, please subscribe to the daily email updates
    • Tweet about this post on Twitter, leave Twitter username in a comment below

Whoop! 10k Bargainmoosers! (And want to win a Kindle?)Rules:

    • Ends 17th June 2011
    • Canadian entrants only
    • 1 type of entry per household
    • Admin’s decision is final in all cases
